It's not too bad - tbh most (by no means all) engineers at least know the basic SI units, even if they don't normally work in them. It does get very confusing at times though, and the potential for error is there. Part of the problem is that I'm in the coal power industry which is dominated by older engineers atm (as there has been little new build work in the last 10-20 years).

Larger problems are encountered if you want to talk to non-scientifically educated people about measurements and don't know the imperial system.

I can see the potential for errors (even NASA fucked up as late as in 1998 with the Mars Orbiter), and there's really only one way to improve the situation. It's unfortunate that the UK is even more conservative than the US in this issue.

I'd disagree there - in the UK everything is given in metric units along with imperial units (excepting road speed limits), whereas in the US this isn't universal. Temperature is generally given in Celcius in the UK but still as Farenheit in the US.

14 stone (ish, depends how much I've eaten that day) = 90kg (?)

I'm quite heavily built and stocky, always have been (though admittedly I could lose a bit of weight quite easily by training and having a stricter diet). BMI charts are only useful in certain circumstances. The relation between your waist and hip are a better indication of weight problems.
