transfering files

Okay so I've just got a new laptop and I want to transfer my music from my old PC to my new one using an ethernet cable. Is there anything special I have to do to make it work? Or should it work as soon as I plug in the cable?

No, that'll require some setting up. Easiest way is to have a router in between.
They are both on the same wireless network - would it be possible to do it that way? If so, do you know how to set it up?

Sure, but wireless sucks ass and it depends on whether you're running XP Home or XP Pro. Can't you connect them both to that wireless router with ethernet cables?

Well one is XP Pro and the other is Vista Home and I dont have a long enough cable to get to my PC :<

Needs to be a specific type of cable to go PC->PC
you need an A-A usb cable or B-B cable , w/e
ethernet cable should work but assign the correct ips to each pc and make sure they are connected to the same domain.
sounds like he wants to plug pc -> pc which requires a crossover cable as opposed to a regular cat5

You'll need a crossover cable unless you connect via a hub/switch/router or at least one of the NICs has auto-sensing.

You also need to set a static IP on each interface (preferably on the same subnet), like this:

PC: 192.168.0.1
Laptop: 192.168.0.2

And finally you have to enable file sharing...
It's easy.
u are noob with pc i guess...
