Magic Online

since I downloaded it again yesterday or so and gave it a try today and now waiting for next round to start in my draft, I started wondering if crossfire has any modo players, or mtg players generally. v3 of mtgo is like vista beta, slow and terrible. yet playing modo again is quite nice, even though I fell asleep before the draft and missed out first 4 picks or so :(

only played magic workstation, as it is completely free
so is modo... if you're good!

It has always been my opinion that trading card games where somewhat flawed. The player with more money has better cards and better chances to win. In magic workstation you can choose your deck throughout all editions (although I still keep some real very old cards (started playing in 1995 with 3rd edition)).
I guess if I stopped smoking I could play again a bit :D when I started an 8 card booster pack cost 4 DM (ca. 2€)

there are different type of formats and tbh I dont think it has ever come down to having more money = more power. on limited formats everyone has exactly the same amount, standard format deck builds can be cheap, yet tier1(highly competive) not to mention borrowing cards from friends.

only format where "money talks" is type 1 where a deck can costs thousands and thousands, but thats rather rare and j4f format, not to mention you can have very cheap decks in this format aswell.

I like limited as it doesnt require any gathering of cards.
Parent
can't remember, is it what we used to call "sealed deck" = 1 starter pack + 2 boosters?
Parent
ye, thats limited format, sealed. 1 starter and 2 or 3 boosters. thats more luck based, it depends on what you open on those packs, though building the deck requires skill.

draft is the most skilled format in mtg imo. many aspects are required in order to be successful in it.
Parent
more money = more cards = more doubles = more power imo....
i havent got a lot of money and i hardly ever get doubles of cards i want to make a deck with. And its pretty obvious that if i get a good number of the same cards and alot of cards that go well together, the deck i make with it is waaay more powerful then when i have to resort to just one of each card.
Parent
I wasnt quite talking about that low level of playing, im a competition player.
Parent
So what? Every competition player gets all his cards for free? Every new series?

Im saying its expensive if u want all the right cards to make a deck with. And if u dont get those exact cards, ur chances of winning are slim. And btw, competition player... that just basically means u play with the same decks as the top players?
Parent
no, but why would u need all cards? you know exactly what cards you need and obviously you have atleast somekind of card base to begin with. by trading / borrowing from friends getting the cards isnt that hard.

and no, constructed is only one part of magic. limited is more competive, drafts atleast. national championships are 50% constructed, 50% limited (drafts). you borrow cards for your cons. deck but if you have no clue how to play limited or if you're not good at it, you aint getting far.
Parent
True, but it will cost u a decent amount of money if u want decent cards/ a decent card base, trading isnt costless ;)

I stopped collecting and playing because all my friends stopped and because i just didnt have the money to buy myself a card base for every new series of card.

EDIT: the only thing i still do is use all my cards to make special decks. Like e.g i made a deck based on a 4card combo which would deal the opponent 2x damage as the number of lands he has, complicated to play, but rly fun :D
Parent
if you want, the hobby wont be expensive, time consuming it will be, but not expensive. not to mention trading is a skill aswell. and for fun I play singleton aka highlander, google it up if u dont know what it is, it's the best 1v1 format in the game. other very nice formats are 2headed giant, 3v3 matches and so on.
Parent
ill check it out, cheers :)
