FC Zenit St Petersburg have won the UEFA Cup. They beat Scottish side Glasgow Rangers 2-0 in the final in Manchester to claim the first major European trophy in the club's history. The Russian side were the stronger throughout. Striker Igor Denisov scored the first goal in the 72nd minute. Konstantin Zyryanov added a second in injury time.
Ten thousand Russian fans travelled to Britain to watch the game. They were well outnumbered by Rangers supporters, 100 thousand of whom had flooded into Manchester from Scotland.
Although there was no serious crowd touble, it's reported that one Zenit fan was stabbed. His life is not thought to be in danger.
Zenit fans were celebrating before the game had even begun, happy just to have got that far.
It was a different story for Rangers fans. They came in singing but left quietly, silenced by one of the best teams in Europe.
Meanwhile, fans in St. Petersburg celebrated deep into the night - and the home town of the newly-crowned champions is likely to stay in party mood for the coming days and weeks.
they'll be worth a punt to make the semis of the champions league next year if they can keep their big guns and Advocaat as coach.
racist bigotry :&
Best player is Yevgeny Savin though.
They did NOT leave quietly. Watch the news. 30 arrests and one Russian fan stabbed.
Typical.
Oh yeah, and Zenit weren't that good last night. Apparently they weren't half as good as they were against Bayern Munich.
Celtic fan?
Evidence from the semi-final and final suggests that Rangers style of play is basically anti-football.
They didn't deserve to be there imo.
If they'd have come up against Bayern in the semis though, instead of Zenit playing them, I think they'd have struggled big time!
srsly: What was ur intention, Im only sure u failed in it.
