Download the 3 part pilot/miniseries if you dont like that then dont bother with the rest, but if you dont like that then you fail at life :(
I just started watching Stargate Atlantis, but I started at the begining of Season 3, because I thought Season 1 was awful and so corney. 3 is good, 4 started really well too which im currently working my way through. But you cant watch Stargate Atlantis without watching Stargate SG1 first, cause that would just be crazy! SG1 is good but particular in the early series you can afford to skip some episodes.
i like writing these pro-bsg essays, gives me chance to think about all the awesomeness I have seen so far \o/
the physics are entirely Newtonian, the weapons are regular bullets and nukes, there are no shields, the only sci-fi element is an FTL (faster than light) jump which lets them jump considerable distance instantly, this is however limited, requires a lot of time between jumps and adds an interesting plot device
the plot is kinda like Jericho in a "fighting to survive" sort of way, the human race is pretty much being brought to extinction, and they are trying to get away and survive. It's less about sci-fi, more about human nature, war, politics, but with some of the best combat scenes you've ever seen
the battlestar is really like an aircraft carrier, it doesn't fly around firing lasers and generating a shield, it provides a base for planes to launch and mount an attack, while it provides covering fire in the form of gun batteries
it's a show that should not go unwatched, however there is a bit of a dry patch towards the end of season 2... but get through it because 3x04 is some of the best TV I've ever seen.
I recommend you download the miniseries, it's a 3 hour long "prequel/pilot" to the series, watch that, and if you enjoy it, get more.
