renamed it to "1.dm_84" and it still doesn't work

This happens when cl_autorecord is non-zero. Set cl_autorecord to 0
the above messages could also be caused by a corrupt demo file.

rename it to "this_is_a_gay_demo.dm_84" and it will work for sure!

It is a message that you get when you try to record a demo from a demo. You might have some autoactions/autorecord somewhere.

i deleted the demo accidentally but then i recovered the demo file and now it isnt working anymore

You can't record demo from a demo... if you know what i mean,
do smth with autorecord.
Had the same problem and it fixed.

start et
check ur cl_autorecord
and set it to 0
and then try to play a demo, if doesn't work then try to play a demo with an other config.
