CPU is overclocking itself

Yeah, I'm having a really weird problem.

It started one night when I was just rebooting my computer cause my sound was fucked up (unrelated problem) and it wouldn't start again. Every time Windows was done loading and I was coming to the login-screen I got a bluescreen and my computer just rebooted itself. After some fiddling around it told me it was my overclock settings that wasn't working and I that I should set them back to default. I did and then it worked.

Problem is I've never touched my clock settings. Now, it worked fine for one day and then it started happening again. So I went into BIOs and loaded my default settings again and rebooted, but still the same problem. I figured it was my CPU's fault again so I decreased the Bus/Core ratio from 9 (max) to 8 and it worked. But now my CPU is underclocked.

So if anyone knows what the problem might be feel free to tell me. There's no problem with the temperature of the CPU.

What do you mean? Did the settings just change without you touching them, or did problems start to appear without you touching anything?
Problems started to appear without me touching anything.

Hm.. Sounds to me like some of your hardware is dying.. Do you have any possibility to try the CPU on a different mainboard?
I'd check out bulld0gs explanation first though :)

The whole computer save the shell is brand new.
Parent
How new? Built it yourself?
Could it be something poorly assembled (no offence :D:D), or just defect hardware?

If you can't figure it out software-wize, I'd really try to isolate the CPU (e.g. by putting it into another machine) and see if it worked there.

About two-three months maybe. Yeah, I built it myself, so I suppose it could be a problem with the assembly, but probably not cause there hasn't really been a problem until now.

Reign of the machines
set default bios settings
I've done that already, several times.

lol didnt read the whole text, like bulldog says, do you have some graphic card or cpu thingy on your pc where you can overclock your stuff with or something.

if nothing works (dont know how good you are with pc's) reset CMOS and get your cpu out off the tray once so it will reset (new cpu detected etc, new settings), put your cooler and new cooling paste on it.

my nvidia ntune service used to try and overclock my pc itself :)
So where do I check that stuff?
Parent
it's ntune imo. if you have it installed, just run it and check
Parent
NVIDIA control panel.
Parent
lol only ntune can overclock, and it only workes on NVIDA motherboards. I hope for hellgoat he doesnt have a NVIDIA motherboard because after the nForce 4 series, they are not known for there stability. NVIDIA Control panel is from your graphics card and cant overclock shit itself, you allways need to turn it on yourself.

increase the cpu vcore
Did you give enough volt to your DDR2? Because default DDR2 volt is 1,8 but most higher clocked memory needs alot more like 2,0v or 2,1 try that.

Also give your full specifcations. Because without knowning your motherboard for example there isnt much we can do.

Also

run memtest
run prime95 (4core edition)
use coretemp to watch your temps
or hwmonitor.
hdtune for checking your hdd's
Test it all..
I haven't clocked my DDR2s at all, and is it an issue with the memory? Cause when I downclocked my CPU it all started to work again, so I just assumed that's where the problem lied.

CPU's dont intend to break very fast..So i dont think its your CPU. Also for non overclocked DDR2 you still need to add volts. Most motherboards only give 1,8 by default but most DDR2 memory like PC6400 needs minimum of 2,0 or 2,1. Like i said earlier i was talking about higher clocked DDR2, not about overclocking DDR2.
And did you tested everything? And whats your conclusion? What are your specifications?
Because most problems with pc's are.

- the user
- heat problems ( what you dont have )
- memory
- motherboard
- power supply too weak or B brand.

You need to eliminate everything first to be sure if its really your CPU. And if you really think its your cpu add some vcore like Nonix said and than test again..Its all about the testing.
