woot linux

so today I was finaly able to instal linux.

I always had problems with my via onboard raid controller but now I found a 40 GB IDE drive for linux :D

Installed ubuntu 7.10 and it works pretty well, did nothing and everything worked even my shitty wireless usb adapter.

I only dislike the default fonts, so if anybody can help me to get the fonts more windows like and how can I acces the Ati control pannel? I installed the drivers but can't find the control pannel :o

And it took me 30 minutes till I was able to play mp3 files :S

if you want to install the microsoft truetype core fonts, open synaptic ("system" > "administration" > "synaptic package manager"), search for the package called "msttcorefonts" and install it. alternatively, install the meta-package called "ubuntu-restricted-extras". installing this package will not only install the microsoft fonts, but also much of the restricted stuff which is necessary to play music and videos encoded with proprietary codecs (e.g., mp3 files).

once you've installed the truetype fonts, go to "system" > "preferences" > "appearance" and click the "fonts" tab. from there you can make the system use the new fonts and adjust font anti-aliasing. you might also have to change the fonts in firefox.

edit: or the pheex way (issue his command in a terminal).
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

edit: or the oBs's way
thx for info:)
as for the ati control panel, the BinaryDriverHowto mentions that you can install something to that extent separately from the driver: the package which you need to install is called "fglrx-control". install it with synaptic or by issuing the following command in a terminal:
Quotesudo apt-get install fglrx-control
please note, though, that the author of that howto doesn't recommend that you use it as "it seems to be buggy, and generally doesnt work". i've never used it myself, so i can't verify whether that's true; the remark might only apply to older versions of the application.
OMG ITS LINUX!
