1 year ago me and my friends were going to vacation in south france. We had to options: Taking the TGV and have a travel time of +/- 3 hours OR taking some little trains where we had to change 6 times the train, waiting at each railroad station 1 or 2 hours (in paris 5 hours !!!) and an overall travel time of 20+ hours.
We took the second option because we had a very small budget and we would save 150 €/person (so 750 € overall)
I had to stay overnight in San Fransisco airport because of fucked up schedule. The indirect way from Dallas to Munich. ;) It wasn't that bad so for 200 $ definitely yes.
I was alone at that airport flew through the whole States for hours struggling to get a flight back and it was fucking cold in the middle of night compared to Dallas. (only had a t-shirt) No way to explore the city. :d
The airport is also pretty far away from the interesting part of the city. Also in CA the public transportation isn't that much evolved so you'd prolly waste time wating for a bus (train?) or money on a cab.
Don't get lost :D. I hope you'll get some fine weather @ GG bridge and yes there are many sexy beastes in SF :D. If you want to buy some nice bread go the shop near Pier 39. There is a submarine around.
Take a walk on the Market street to see the skyscrapers and be careful that sometimes is pretty cold out there :D.
If the US is only a stopover and not a place you actually visited, then you probably won't get a visa that allows you to leave the airport, so you'd be spending 9 hours in a terminal.
I recon if you can find some entertainment to bring for yourself, it's doable, but if you already flew for 15 hours and then still have to wait 9 hours to get on your next flight and it will spare you only 200 euros? I wouldn't do it.
I had to stay in Newark Liberty Airport for 7 hours waiting for a transfer to TN. It wasn't too bad, would've gone outside if it wasn't pishing it down but there was enough in the airport to keep me entertained. Including a group of jews in their funny little hats and twirly sideburns waiting for a flight to Jerusalem.. hours of comedy entertainment right there.
