FA Chief Barwick Sacked

Barwick has been dramatically ousted from his post by independent Labour peer Lord Triesman after less than three years in the job.

The atmosphere at HQ has soured of late, with Barwick missing three successive weekly FA meetings.

Barwick becomes the fourth FA Chief Executive to exit in the space of ten years, following controversial trio Mark Palios, Adam Crozier and Graham Kelly.

The FA has been all-change since Triesman arrived at Soho Square. Barwick's power at the FA and over the national team has slowly diminished since Triesman implemented a new chain of command.

Still, the majority of football fans will not be sad to see him go as they partially blame him for England&'s failure to reach the European Championships. The decision to put Steve McClaren in the England hotseat was widely slammed.

In truth, Triesman has been the acting Chief Executive since he arrived. Barwick did improve the Association's bank balance during his tenure, but had a stormy relationship with the Premier League and his business credentials were doublted by many.

His fate was finally decided at Tuesday's FA board meeting and the search for a new Chief Executive will begin immediately. However, the fact that an executive chairman and a chief operating officer are on the payroll will allow things to tick over for the time being.

Barwick has a one-year rolling contract worth £450,000-a-year and will be handed a chunk by way of pay-off.
