When I checked game-monitor.com , TF2 had 17 000 players online, so its one of the most succesfull lately released FPSs, in comparision CoD4 has ~30 000, ETQW <1000, UT3 <500
From the competetive point of view, its situation is quite ok too, ~200 clans @ etf2l, they also got a spot at CGS amateur series and ASUS Russia lan. But gameplay wise imo this game isnt suitable for serious competition.
