Ok so i just got a 22" widescreen LCD
I would like to play certain games like ET in 1024x768 and have black bars on the sides instead of playing in the native res of 1680x1050
I have a 9800GTX video card, i go into the Nvidia control panel and go to 'Change flat panel scaling' and change it from 'Use my display's built-in scaling' to 'Use Nvidia scaling with fixed-aspect ratio'
This is supposed to let me run in 4:3 resolutions with black bars on the sides, Unfortunately it is not working and when I open a game in r_mode 6 the picture is stretched across the entire screen
I have tried multiple driver versions and even tried a different LCD monitor with no success
Running XP 32bit of course
Any ideas?

Unsure if it will work for you since you have the Geforce 9xxxx, anyway gl
Change flat panel scaling to Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio
Go to Manage custom resolutions
Go to Create
(You have to follow the next steps in this exact order or it will not work)
Go to Advanced
Change Timing standard to CVT reduced blank
Change Horizontal desktop pixels to whatever value you wish to use (in my case 1024)
Change Vertical desktop pixels to whatever value you wish to use (in my case 768)
Change GDI Refresh rate to whatever value your monitor can handle (in my case 60, 70, or 75)
Go to Test
It should work from now on
I wasted many hours trying to figure this bullshit out. The trick is that I had to change the timing standard before putting in the resolution values, not after.
Fuck Nvidia.
