Vista => XP

hey,

I got this new pc of a friend which runs vista. She really wants her old windowsxp back, so who am I to argue :P

Anyways. The SATA disk is not liking my attempts to install windowsXP. I did some quick googling and it seems I need to make a new windowsXP cd with sata drivers etc. Is there any easy way to install winXP on a sata drive?

Shouldn't there already be SATA drivers, no matter what XP?

Best thing to do would be to download another version
Yep should be.

plz explain to me what i got to do :P I'm still running an amd64, all these new technologies are too much to handle for this old man.

Can I just make a bootable USB, do i need some special install cd, whatever? Never worked with SATA before (well i have but never had any probs with it).

Easiest thing to do would be download another version. I'm running this one atm. http://www.mininova.org/get/1781961. SP3 intergrated, will have the SATA drivers.

SATA is just a faster hdd... IDE slower :(
SATA is not an HDD type

New Windows 7 Paint:

It will look just like Vista but the code will be rewritten. What people hope = less memory consumption and optimized code.

any info when it comes out? in stores

I heard that there will soon be avi some alfa / beta versions. Can't tell for sure how "soon" that will be. Probably this winter.
When will it be finished... nobody can tell :), not even the developers. My guess it is that it will take a few years until Vista sucks all the money it can get.

API function for example
Parent
what does that mean? tell me tell me
Parent
dunno you just randomly get kicked for missing api function :|. never found a solution for it. eventually i could play with ~10 fps in etpro, couldn't talk on vent and had to reconnect after every map :/.

hihi
bye bye you suck ass
You need to go into the bios and change the harddrive setting to slow it down, each bios lists it differently but there will be a clear section that has a feature on the HDD that you can either enable or disable it, disable it. Then you can install XP, install the drivers and then reenable the SATA function. I have the same on my laptop and we had the same problem on the PB Machines at CDC4
Are you sure you're not talking about IDE emulation over the SATA controllers?

(c) Ronner :D
Parent
so, will I encounter the same problem with my soon-to-arrive vostro 1700 while trying to install XP on it? :-)
Parent
Ive got the vostro 1510 and the answer is yes
Parent
Thanks for the reply. I found some more ppl sayign i needed to change some hd settings, but i couldnt find many options in the bios. I did find the usual HDD settings, i'll have a closer look tomorrow :P

Check this out also:
Quote by wikiwikiIf AHCI is not enabled by the motherboard and chipset, SATA controllers typically operate in "IDE emulation" mode which does not allow features of devices to be accessed that are not supported by the ATA/IDE standard. Windows device drivers that are labeled as SATA are usually running in IDE emulation mode unless they explicitly state that they are AHCI.

So all you have to do is to find a way to put the SATA drive under IDE emulation which is very old interface and there is surley a driver on the Windows CD for it.
