HD4870 crashes

I got an anoying problem. My GPU crahes constantly in game. For all different applications (even aquamark etc) it runs perfectly.

- I thinkit is not the temperature (in aquamark it was way higher and didnt crash)
- latest GPU driver is on

Specs:

- Intel E8500 (2x3.16 Ghz)
- P5Q-E
- 4GB 1066 RAM
- HD4870

my latest idea is that the power supply might be too low because the $%&$§"-retard gave me a 430W instead of the ordered 620W, but im not sure if this is possible

Any different ideas?

what do u mean by "crash"?
what game?
All games ... ET, CSS, Crysis, it does not crash immediatly, but after a few minutes. And also not always^^ sometimes it works for hours and noting happens

Crash: the display freezes with grey squares all over the show then the video goes to a blank screen. CPU etc is still running.

Have you checked the temps after such crash? That really sounds a temp / PSU issue.
Parent
the current temp is always on my screen. and always lower than after 3hrs Aquamark ...
Parent
What is the temp? And the PSU is?
Parent
Temp of GPU core is constanty 75°C (pretty hight but normal imo)

PSU is a Rasurbo Silent & Power (435W)
Parent
normal is 50-60, 75 is too high :o i have around 80
Parent
In the core 75 is ok ... the alloying of the P/N - doped silicon starts at 100°<
Parent
try to open the case, put some fan and see if the game lasts longer, or happens less
Parent
Allready did. With all fans / no fans. the temperatur is constant. im pretty sure it is something else^^
Parent
I have the same card, temp constant 80°C and no crashes.
Parent
Which board do you use and which PSU?
Parent
asus P5Q pro and antec earthwatts 500W which comes with the case
Parent
Yeah, it's normal, it's designed to withstand temps of 110celcius :)

The thing that makes me bit cautious to blame the CPU is that you can run Aquamark without problems. Have you tried Furmark?
Parent
Both are running ;-)
Parent
a noname 430w psu is probably your problem.. get a corsair, chieftec, fortron, ocz, xilence psu or something.
Parent
i have pretty much the same, or some sort off.
i have an ez-cool 500W and not sure if it's my PSU, so far i think it's my temp, at least my GFX
your 3 options are:
-buy a new PSU, even if it might not be the problem, u still need a better one
-buy a gfx cooler (such as zalman)
-tell me which of time worked for u
Parent
The PSU is?

I haven't heard of any mass HD4870 crash symptom so give more information on what crashes, what drivers, what OS and so fort.
PSU in my opinion.

I believe the 4870's recommended supply is minimum 500W.

I take it you have both PCI-E connectors attached?

Strange that it doesnt happening when under testing though.
Thats what perplexes me too -.-

yes ofc both.
Parent
PSU. Had the same with another cfx card : -D
If it is rly the PSU im going to work the fucking guys ass off!!! >:|
Parent
mate, promise me if u fix it give me a call :O i want to play games too :L
Parent
I swear :-D
Parent
PSU is a Rasurbo Silent & Power (435W) wtf oO ?
Buy Corsair / Chieftec or OCZ.
That was what I actually ordered^^ corsair ....
Parent
be quiet! is superior :P
Parent
Ok. called the shop. Im on my way getting a 550W one^^ see if this works :<
good, update this shizzle!
Parent
wtf omg lol .... gotta new PCU now but this crappy holy motherfucking bullshit got only 1 PCI-E connector ...
Parent
that means u cant connect it? :(
Parent
I cant even boot ... im at my brothers PC atm ...
Parent
ffs :( oh well im gna eat homemade pizza, ill send u a slice :d
Parent
I hope this erases at leat a small part of my depression and aggression now ...
Parent
dont be sad, once its all over you can happily play games \o/ im waiting to fix this problem for months
Parent
There are only 3 possibilities:

1. PSU ... I test this tomorrow
2. GPU is broken tested whether today or on saturday
3. RAM (unlikely) tested today or saturday

But I'll keep you up to date and tell you how I (hopefully) fixed it ;)
Parent
i doubt its ram, i changed my ram (at least they said so) and nothing went differend
if none of these helped, your only choice is too cool down ur card ;d
Parent
435W is really enough for a HD4870 as long as it's a good mark :l
430 watt not really enough for a 4870 500 at least!
At least 500W is the recommended power supply for a 4870, same as for 4850.

I have a Club3D Radeon HD 4850 OC, peak temp 60°c (Overclocked and better cooling)
