Finnish mentality

Out of curiosity, I just had to make this post and I do not intend in any way to offend anyone :)

After the Finnish school massacre there has been a lot of coverage of it in Norwegian media, including interviews with Finnish people about the happenings. What I find weird about nearly everyone that is interviewed, is that they don't seem affected by the massacre. It just looks like as if they don't care, no feelings what so ever. In an interview with the president of Finland, the president said that the problem is the Finnish mentality, that fins don't really talk too much to one another.

Another thing I find weird is that the people that are interviewed always have really poor English skills. That also goes for ET players as well. Every fin I've been on vent with is scared to speak on Ventrilo (I guess because they know they have a bad pronunciation). But honestly, anyone that speak a different language than English daily needs practice in order to get good at it! Also in real life fins seem insecure. Every single person that is interviewed does not dare to have eye contact with the interviewer.

I generally think you guys are really nice and humble, but at the same time you seem a bit dull and depressed :b

I find all this really odd and that's why I want all you fins on Crossfire to explain to me why it's like this :)

I thought you guys would prove me wrong, but no :(
Parent
They're all nerds.
was my first thought too :P
Parent
if u wanna win, take a fin!
1. the massacre: was worst what can happen but it doesnt make me "sad" ofc it was horrible. but my life doesnt ruin coz that
2. and u r right:D i hardly talk english, coz i know i'm not so good @ it:< finnish only
they're not all like that, just look at crew and reikkeri 8)
most of the fins have "mika häkkinen" style of english and it's good that americans (i don't know about english people) has noticed it that you must speak slowly english to us,dunno why but they are right. :D it is pretty easy to spot finnish guy from a random vent channel (his accent is so mm,can't explain it :/)

this went a bit "off topic" but i forgot what you asked on the post lol.
I like your reply, because we have the same phenomenon in Norway with what we call "Petter Solberg English" :) But most people over here try to speak a more understandable accent. Still, I don't understand the Finnish "insecure" way of being that I've tried explaining.
Parent
i can't really explain it,but in my case i have more balls to "overtry" pronouncing the words as they are ment to be pronounced, but if there is 1 finnish guy on the vent at the same time i will speak only fast and simple english. maybe i am ashamed to try,it goes somehow "overacting" in eyes of fin? i don't know,good/hard question dude. :D
Parent
omfg omfg omfg xD
Parent
im not finnish, but i know the feeling when you know your prounciation sucks and you need to talk in english. it's hard to express your emotions correctly, i seem quiet and shy when talking english cause i know my pronunciation sucks, while im the exact opposite to it when talking estonian.

anyway, im over my pronunciation already, but this is just what i feltl when i wasnt used to talking in english
Parent
fins are drunk and have weapons.
its true finnish people dont really share their thoughts with eachother, but i wouldnt say all finnish people have bad english skills. Most ET players i know from finland have good pronunciation. (Im finnish and I've spoken english for 14 years)
I wouldn't say they have good pronunciation, I'd say they have a decent/understandable pronunciation (and I have heard quite a few ET players speak on vent).
Then again they all seem shy for some reason.
Parent
finns are too used at beeing drunk :x

when youre drunk its much easier to speak any language and you cant feel depressed or be dull then :D

easy!

ps. the whole thing is A BIT of stereotypeshitz :>
Meaning you can't talk normally (as it should) when you're sober, well that makes sense ! :D
Parent
just bit of a humoristic view on the subject ;>

dunno why is it like that really :D

alltho I think say you are good finnish english skills are not , true not is the journal everything is it in, english good finnish least at write good, pronouncing is maybe good not.
Parent
hehe pretty much like that ye :P
the topic in general is too subjective anyway
Parent
oh well.. that massacre was sad thingy but i dont really give a shit about it because i didnt personally know anyone of the victims.

oh and we can talk norwegian in weekends :-)
Finnish people are afraid of using articles, that's why their English is so distinguishable (you'd be able to spot a Finnish guy 9 out of 10 times by observing his English).
no way you could distuinguish that im finnish if id talk to you :P
Parent
Lucky 1 out of 10 yu0 aer!
Parent
i hate articles :<
Parent
That's so true, I've observed that aswell :P
Parent

QuoteAnother thing I find weird is that the people that are interviewed always have really poor English skills.

I would not say that everyone of us is bad at English since most of us can write decent English. It's just that the language is not suitable for our mouth because the pronunciation is a way different in Finnish. We don't dare to speak because we think that we would pronounce it wrong and others would not understand us. That's why we are silent in vent usually!

At least It's like that for me.
exactly! thats why we should take mystic as our role model!!!
Dont really see why everybody should be damm crying...
Comoon its like if there is a bomb blast in iraq WICH HAPPENS EVERY DAY and there dies 50people every day... I dont see people crying about them.

People whos friends or family persons die then crying is ok.. but.

But thats true.. finns are so shy.
You notice that specially in Turkus nightlife.

English true... you can look my spelling. Im too lazy to write right :)
agree with this guy.
Parent
Well im not suprised that someones flips, Finnish mentalhealth care sucks, First you need to wait months/years that you get there and only they give you is pills. seems like they arent interested to take care these peoples problems with anything else than pills. Like that would repair everything whats wrong in people :)

sry for engrish but this what I think
That's why you should use private section.
Parent
loool we don't make eye contact just coz we don't do it.. it's nothing to do with "ar we insecure" or not ... stop with the hating... mr "I don't wanna offend and shit" ur lack of knowledge kinda offends tho coz u don't know a shit bout us!!! .... peace!
QuoteEvery fin I've been on vent with is scared to speak on Ventrilo.

You've been playing with some random losers, our vent at least is pretty jolly most of the time. :)
And that's a fact! :D

The school massacres haven't really affected me, if anything, I just feel sorry for the people who lost their loved ones there.

Us Finns are modest, shy and never have any kind of small talk, which other countries find strange.

And about Finnish (especially young) people's lingual skills, true, they do suck.
I die a little inside when I hear a fellow Finn speaking English, I just can't stand the way how they pronounce everything wrong :D
I guess I'm a perfectionist when it comes to languages, but hell.
It's just that the language is not suitable for our mouth because the pronunciation is a way different in Finnish.
So you're saying Finnish is a lot different than norwegian/swedish/russian? I thought it was a mix of those languages? How come the three of them don't have major problems in pronouncing English?
Parent
Because practically, we don't pronounce the words at all. Our language may sound a bit flat to an outlander.
Parent
How can you speak and not pronounce? =F
Parent
Pronouncing and speaking are two whole different things for the Finns.

Our pronounciation key would probably be something like "Don't put any weight on any syllable"
Parent
Finnish is not related to norwegian/swedish/russian :D i think you should check it up.
Parent
So you just made your own languages all of a sudden and you're not related to any other language? Sounds like bs to me.
Parent
Finnish language belongs to its own language family (estonian is related) , swedish and norwegian are germanic , and russian is slavic .
Parent
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uralic_languages

So hungarians & estonians have the same problems?
Parent
The Estonian and Hungarian languages have intonations and other varieties in their tones, ours mostly are used for sarcastic effect and such, not for general speaking.
Parent
you sound like bs. get ur facts right stupido.
Parent
You should have better things to do when you're at your gf's.
Parent
lol, when shes doing makeup, no i dont have :D
Parent
Start playing with yourself because insulting me doesn't suit you very well.
Parent
Pretty much completely different. :)
Parent
Finnish as a language is more related to Hungarian for example than the other Scandinavian languages, and they just happen to belong to the same language family as English (Germanic).

Parent
Ye I looked it up. It's just hard for me to imagine English pronouncation is difficult.
Parent
For a Finn it's a lot easier to speak Spanish for example than English. It's just about the way the language is pronounced. Sure it may sound hard for you because your mother tongue (Dutch, right?) is part of the same language family with English. :p
Parent
Try learning some Finnish. It's just hard for me to imagine Finnish pronunciation is difficult...
Parent
I'm major fail at pronouncing any language so ye. I always get laughed at when I pronounce things wrong in dutch/latin :(
Parent
Do you know that it's said that Finnish is the hardest language to learn after Chinese and Japanese.
Parent
But it is :D
Parent
belive me, it is.
Parent
How can the massacre not have any effect on your lifes? I can imagine people will be more strict at schools, checking if people have guns with them, no? Doesn't it scare you that something like this can happen in your own country and not just in the USA? It would scare me. I would want some better control on the distribution of guns etc.
QuoteI would want some better control on the distribution of guns etc.
Quote

They just made some changes in the law

And indeed people are stricter in schools now. After the last massacre some schools have got threats and and because of it they have closed the schools for a day or two just to check if the threat was real.
Parent
So it does effect your life doesn't it? I can imagine you not to be emotional or sad because of it, but still its something that effects you, maybe not emotional but certainly in every day life.
Parent
Well yes, if u think it that way!
Parent
That massacre and it's consequences hasn't effected my life one bit. Although the reason for it is that I don't go to any school and less likely will ever go. And I don't see any point in pistol shooting as a hobby. Hunting with it is a complete joke. "Defending" your family with it is a complete joke too (in my opinion), so I don't care about gun laws as long as there are more bread on the stores than guns on the streets and that tragedy is not spoken on public very much any more.
Parent
Well (imo) then there is a major difference between Finnish people and Dutch. There were some "minor" incidents with busdrivers and youth from marocco and I think its been one of the major topics in politics & on the street for 2 weeks (until the recent financial crisis). I think a school massacre would be a hot item for weeks and weeks 0o.
Parent
Ofcourse public media pulled out of every last bit of information about it. Now the articles of that tragedy seems to decrease (thank god). I just meant common people with that "it's not been spoken on public". Speaking on my behalf, I'm getting pretty sick of those newspapers writing "Neighbour reveals the shooter's terrible secret! He was a hermit!" Then you read that article and you think "Wow this is just plain bullshit. Same article was in yesterday's paper written a little bit different"
Parent
I think i can speak "good" english reason why i dont talk on vent is cos I usually like to speak with guys i know.

And about the massacres, they didn't have effect on my life rly, ofc its sad when things like that happen, im just happy didnt happen to me or my friends.
I'd agree alot of the older people don't speak/understand english that well. As for anyone under 30 I'd say Finland is doing pretty well in understanding. Maybe some of us speak a little like Mika Häkkinen but at least it's pretty easy to listen to if you're not a native. In the ET scene I think finns do alot better than most countries, maybe you've just been involved with some kids who are too embarassed to express themselves in english. I've never had any such problems with my fellow fins, even the almighty mystic is pretty good in english even though he doesn't talk much, but then again, he doesn't talk that much overall.
Pretty much exactly what I was about to write :-)

ps. näin sut taas pyöräilemässä eilen, torinrannassa tällä kertaa.

i thought his english improved a lot during the time i knew him in impact and he started talking a lot more when he knew the team
Parent
God, I wish I could find that comedy clip that Nizou showed me once of rally-english. I can't remember which driver it was, probably Tommi Mäkinen.
Parent
No. It's some comedy clip from Finnish TV.
Parent
More mystic information for fanboys please! :P
Parent
I can recall playing with 3 fins in team north a couple seasons back, hardly any of them spoke on vent, just the swedes and me speaking :P
Parent
made u hax tho didnt it :D:D
Quote by LakaiiNils is bound to flame people from Eastern Europe !
Not to mention me, Nils and kiitos standing behind Mrozu playing an official match, saying "I WAS FIRST, I WAS FIRST" when he came out of spawn first. That was hilarious

:'DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Finland sux, nothing else to say.
It is tabu that Finlander's aren't showing their feelings. It means you are weak or something, but where I live is really close to Kauhajoki and here guys have showed their feelings. Judging fins with some politicis interwiev is pretty one sided, but agree that they aren't showing their feelings.

I doubt that we can't speak english/engrish, Finnish people have placed very high in international comparisons and our english skills are highly admired around world. I personally don't talk in voice much, because I am shy and I don't have anything to say or I just might be boring guy.

In Finland somehow I think if you look at someone's eyes he/she thinks that you like her/him or something like that.

PS. GRATZ MARTTI AHTISAARI
you're partly right, but i'm not sure is it generally correct that finns don't talk. myself, if with right company I can't stop talking.

about massacres. I don't know why it's been happening now twice here already. I still think it's just pure coincidence. of course ppl are sad, but they might hide it or they realize that they can't mourn every single thing forever. it sounds harsh, but that's how it is.

I've heard that ventrilo thingie before and I totally agree.

finns being depressed more than others is a myth :p we just don't fakesmile!
Finnish person: :{ :{ :{ :D
Other people: :{ :| :) :D
Haha
Parent
We finns are just sullen.
why should we be affected by the massacre?
also dont know about poor english
at least most of the finnish guys are good at writing it if not talking
Was about to write an ecyclopedia-like answer to this topic but decided to give it up because of the narrow option of my own. I'll make the core short though for you to judge:

We Fins think before act, we don't find it natural to invite strangers to our homes at the first sight, we don't try desperately to make new friends out of everybody we meet and we are a bit slow to adept changes. The good thing of "us" is that once warmed up, we are very jolly folk and good at making lifelong friends. The ammount we lack in number, we outcome in the quality. :)

The shooting (again) was a tragedy but it's impossible to predict the outcome of the invidual. We are all different at all, and like quiki already stated: there is worse things going on around the world and the media is making the situation just worse by promoting these "small" things over the real problems at todays world.

(You haven't been in the same ventrilo with us Fins much it seems :P)
What Janne said. We don't talk often cause we suffer 12/7 from hangover and the rest 12/7 we are drunk :D
MY PRONOUNCING HAS BEEN HIGHLY APPROVED BY MY ENGLISH TEACHER AND MANY ENGLISH PEOPLE AND I EVEN KNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME OTHER THAN MR. GODLY AIMER LAKAII. Just some thoughts 8*)
