Quote"Everyone [in the UK] who buys a mobile telephone will be forced to register their identity on a national database under government plans to extend massively the powers of state surveillance. Phone buyers would have to present a passport or other official form of identification at the point of purchase. Privacy campaigners fear it marks the latest government move to create a surveillance society. A compulsory national register for the owners of all 72m mobile phones in Britain would be part of a much bigger database to combat terrorism and crime. Whitehall officials have raised the idea of a register containing the names and addresses of everyone who buys a phone in recent talks with Vodafone and other telephone companies, insiders say."

That's rly strange
well, if u think thats entirely wrong, your a little fucked up in the head... to not want your country of inhabitance to be a safer place...

OR your a terrorist, in which case id have to say, expected.
nice being racist against indians
Parent

..............................

Any open society is going to be vulnerable to terrorism. If we look at how little terrorism related deaths have occurred in the last ten years compared to problems like heart disease, cancer, hell even deaths from car accidents, it is negligible.

We should not be sinking this much money into stuff that won't even realistically protect us at all. It is better spent elsewhere, and I'd also love to maintain my rights to freedom and privacy.

Would this law really make you feel safer? Really? Would this stop terrorists using cell phones? Fuck no it wouldn't. Jesus.

[sorry if this post doesnt read too fluently, wrote stood up before i went to sleep]

dont misunderstand my point here, i dont fully agree with it myself. i would feel rarther intruded knowing that my main source of private conversations is registered with the government... but what im saying is, in the long run, it would 'technically' make the country a safer place... IF, and thats a big IF, if the process is carried out in the correct way. as it can only do good to find who is actually in this god forsaken country..

btw if its done properly, surely u will see thousands more illegals being exiled.

"as it can only do good to find who is actually in this god forsaken country.."
Yeah, because all illegal immigrants (especially the terrorists!) will immediately register because of this. lol

You don't create laws in the name of counter terrorism in order to find immigrants, that's just retarded.
Parent
No, the chances are it’d simply force ‘illegals’ further underground to be easily exploited by employers without the protection of the national minimum wage – further depressing the wage market, or worst into crime.

A simple analogy. Assume you have a child. The safest way to raise said child, away from the dangers of the road, other children, paedophiles etc would be to keep said child locked inside the house. That would ensure maximum security for said child. But is the price not too great to the childs mental wellbeing & upbringing? child society

I despair. People like you are the reason we live in such a state.
Parent
well he is asian. What do you expect?
Parent
You’ve really quite pissed me off ~/

I can’t imagine a criminal would ever think to steal a phone to easily evade this. Leaving this Draconian measure effecting only the rest of us.

The list of this government misusing anti-terrorism laws be near endless. Councils surveying people’s bins, declaring the nation of Iceland a terrorist!, racist ineffective stop & search, making it illegal to protest in front of the House of Commons & the surrounding area, detention without trial, attempting to throw out habeas corpus etc etc

Don’t let your fucking ignorance drag the rest of us down with you.
Parent
goddamit
was preparing a terror act, now i cant :<<<<<<<<
yeah its impossible to do any proper terror without a cell phone
Parent
it's no real terror if you can't post your movie on youtube afterwards!
Parent
brown is the biggest twat alive.
awesome =) now you'll be much safer
I'm a terrorist.
altho the problem behind this step of having a big brother government is deterring,

i do fuck all on a phone that would get me in trouble :/ if you do , then u prolly shouldnt be doing it anyway.

Im sure they'd all have a laugh a me trying to phone a taxi at 4 in the mornin on a saturday
really ridiculous
QuoteIm sure they'd all have a laugh a me trying to phone a taxi at 4 in the mornin on a saturday

lol :)
Parent
Like that'll get passed lol
While it does suck, there's nothing we can do about it. Pointless worrying about =)
Vote them out in local, national & European elections. Write to your MP - make it clear how you feel and how you'll vote should they support the bill.

42 days was defeated (albeit in the Lords, but they didn't have the strength to force it through with the Parliament act), there's enough people out there.

Way to go UK!
Gotta love the UK. Thankfully - im dutch.
hi meez
omg
same with the online searching stuff (government browsing computers of suspicious terrorists) - 65 percent of our citizens agreed to it.
The phraseology of such a question is so subjective one wouldn't take these opinion polls too seriously – especially ones peddled by this government.
Parent
you are right, just think of all the old men & women getting asked - still it's a bit scary
Parent
hahaha. you silly people. since 2002, anyone buying a contract mobile telephone, has AUTOMATICALLY had all their registration details fully registered with a 3rd party company in london. you can however apply in writing to this company to have your details removed from this register. they SEEMINGLY use it for crime stopping purposes, but also, any large advertising company can apply to them for your details also, for a fee. dont believe me? call any of your mobile suppliers, they have to tell you this information freely and also have to give you the details to remove youreself from this companies database.

*EDIT* and the rediculous part of it is this.... you can buy a payg simcard and never register it, so why would anyone need this details?

I wasn't aware it was registered with a 3rd party =[

As for selling personal information to ad companies, governments in on the act too with the DVLA...
Parent
yup. i found out when t-mobile saw fit to release my registration data to a 3rd party, who then decided to text me daily, 4 times a day till i had to change my number. some crap to do with the "freedom of information" act or clause in terms and conditions :/
