Im arround learning some vocabulary for my exam tomorrow and there is the word

"to sink" set as a synonym for "to ignore"


I checked leo.org but found nothing on that ... did anyone hear this before?

Nope, but I can imagine that it would mean the same as "to ignore" in some situations..

No. the german word "ignorieren" (ignore) is given, and as transaltion "to sink"

the phrase "to let something sink" is sometimes used in situations like:" JOhny: My best friend fucked my mom! Pete: AH comeone just let it sink.. " meaning to put something behind you or let those thoughts nd feelings sink, dont pay attention to them in order to let them disappear.. in other words to ignore them

He's right, but that doesn't make the verb 'sink' a synonym for the verb 'ignore' on it's own, it has to be used in conjunction with another verb. 'Allow it to sink' 'let it sink' etc. But more commonly you would say 'let it drop'.

Next thing that confused me was the word to quash which was translated with "halten" what is in english normally "to keep" or smth

Do you know any connection between quash and keep? :D
