broken ext hdd

hy, got a problem

just plugged my laptop's cable into external hdd (it fits in nicely) by accident, the lamp started blinking - when i realized what's going on, it was too late. tried plugging in the real cable now, nothing happens, the hdd seems dead, something probably got burned, i can smell something strange

anyone ever did something similar? i'm wondering if there's any hope in getting the data back, it was pretty important

:/ i'm starting to beleive there's no way to recover the data

i doubt it has any extra protection inside since the AC->DC converter should be enough, so probably the important stuff got burned

i know about those services, but it would cost me fuckin a lot because the hdd is 250GB and the really important data could be anywhere, which could result in tons of $$$ until the needed data is recovered. so no, no matter how much it's important, not interested in this method :( thanks for help though

just talked to danL on irc, i will *probably* be able to just replace electronics inside, which should cost me about 30EUR. hopefully it will work, hopefully :(

If you're lucky it's not the actual disk that's broken but only some controller shit. Tried to open it and see what it looks like inside?

trying to :) the case is pretty fucked up, i don't think there's a way to open it without breaking the plastic all over the place

just open it. but a day my hdd burned too by lamps. I just see my disck inside like hashish. Anyway in this shits u have just to buy another one. To recovery files i do not think it is possible. Are u an ingegneer ? :D

yes, i am, but never worked with this. i'm capable of replacing whatever is needed, was just wondering if anyone had anything similar, just to see if there's any hope in this at all

well when mine broked i can not do anything cus the disck was unrecoverable. Just buy another one. so i can't give u any chance to resolve it sry. it depends of what is broke\burned

buying another one is not a solution, i don't give a shit at all about the hdd as hdd, i need the data on it

anyway, just opened it, removed all the elctronics, well wtf it's a normal hdd inside, the electronics are just an usb "wrapper". hopefully that's all that got burned, will try plugging in the HDD into computer as if it was a normal HDD :)

nope, didn't wait for tommorow, but tried now. seems like the hdd died for real :( the comp fails to start at all when it's plugged in

edit: oh and no, it's not a maxtor, it's a WD

JFYI, my HDD has been fixed and no data is lost. a guy i know had a similar hdd he doesn't use, so i gave him mine and he replaced electronics on it. everything works fine, you should try it, too

i hope this "smart" help can give u chances: look if bios see the hdd, u know how to do it :). in the case of bios recognize it and S.O. no i think the file system burned. So GG u have to pay.. cus this work is expensive for a person. Otherwise if it works use drive image to clone ur hdd. dunno if u work under linux or windows.. the second one u can watch in control pannel --> administration( strumenti di amministrazione ) --> computer --> disk source. [i tried to write it in english :D dunno how it is written]. Maybe if the filesystem is corrupted u can use a recovery file like "file recovery". that's all in my hands :D GL

i didn't say the OS fails to boot - computers fails to start AT ALL. absolutely _nothing_ happens when i press the button if the burned hdd is plugged in

I did something very similar to that around 6 months ago, and my external harddrive never recovered from that.

its probably just the external case which is broken, just get it out and attach it to an IDE/SATA cable... you're pc will probably recognize it =P
