dual or quad core?

Hi guys, I don't know wich one I should get :)
some guys say that dual core is better for games but I also use photoshop (my brother to be more precise) and a quad can be quite nice for that too..

So what do you guys think?

Quad, future is all!
unexpected that you would be the first to reply..

I just came back =;(
Parent
quad core ofc
8 core!
yeah but there ain't any mobo's yet for that =( it's a shame
Parent
+ too expensive :s
Parent
agree, so I heard you're making my fragmovie with Fex :)

GIGACORE
get urself a 16 core, you seem to have enough money for your pc anyway !
:DDD
lol how did you manage to get that pic :D did Fex gave it to you lol?
Parent
das dus echt totaal ni grappig ofzo die pic e :s
Parent
single core GHIHIHIHI
quad is for renderinf stuffs

get the dual if yu need for gaming
^- what nonix saidz
Parent
so the quad core works worse than dual core for games :s?
Parent
Not worse, but very few games utilize quadcore so it's a bit of a waste at the minute. Plus dualcores have higher clocks at cheaper prices atm >:)
Parent
Call two names of games that support quad.
Parent
Crysis
Far Cry2
Parent
Neither of them support more than 2 cores. There's talk that GTA IV will be the first PC game to actually make use of quad >:(
Parent
Crysis does support quad.
Parent
Check your CPU usage, it's always one or two proc's that have usage spikes, never all 4. Either that, or it just isn't CPU intensive enough to really rape all 4!

Edit: my bad, ofc they support more than two cores. Meant that there are no games optimized for quad core gaming yet! You, dutchy, are correct >:D
Parent
supreme commander
GTA IV
Crysis:WH
Doubt about far cry
Parent
it's just more expensive
Parent
zeKxa is so gay lol.
Parent
idd, you just can't get more gay than zeKxa, he's the ultimate definition of gayness
Parent
i second all post between Nonix and me.

CPU Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz, 3166 Mhz

in the first 2 years all games will be made for duel :D
why you think that? source :p ?
Parent
they said to me when i bought my new pc 2 mounths ago :)
Parent
@ computer store :)
Parent
they tricked you :o:o
Parent
fail :D http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122237
soon more games takes advantage of quad
this is an unbalanced time for upgrades imo, should wait 1 more month before purchasing a system
Parent
k this sux :(
Parent
E8500 is a great deal, but expect it to be really slow in a year or so
Parent
copy the link and go back to the store, call them a liar, then pull out your hand grenade and have them give u a quad or u will "start shit"
Parent
dont push down nonix journal !!!!!!

quad core,

most games that only use one core are so old they'll play just as well.
quad > dual obviously but if you dont want to pay that much a nice dual core is also ok
obvious ? why , alot of people say duo is better for games atm so what makes you so sure?
Parent
BECAUSE MOST GAMES DON'T SUPPORT QUAD

What are you going to do with your pc anyway ? movie rendering and some other design shit, or just gaming ? and are you going to play all the new upcomming games, or the old ones ?
Parent
my brother uses photoshop and makes websites, we're gonna play cod 4&5, et, css and we wanna be sure that the pc can run all upcoming games nicely :)
Parent
My Q6600 can play all of them easily and its nice for doing other stuff, like photoshop and vegas and all that shit. So if you want to play new games to, go for the quad, and you can still run the old games to easily. There is no reason why not take the quad. I had the same question a year ago, quad or duo, I took the quad and I'm happy I did it. (NICE GRAMMAR CBA TO TYP DECENT NOW, bored:( )
Parent
k thxs for your awesome reply m8!
Parent
how many ghz?
Parent
Q6600 €189,- 2,400 mhz x4
E8400 €159,- 3,100 mhz x2

Most of the games do only support 2 cores.
But in fact the QUAD CORE 6600 will win this core-fight.

Since I'm also building a new system I will still choice a E8400 instead of a Q6600
Parent
He obviously overclocked it ;)
Parent
duh, I bought my Q6600 more then a year ago =[
Parent
How much can I overclock my E8400?
Parent
I got the Q9550s quad and i must say im not disappointed that i got quad instead of dual. Besides even if dual core is better for games that would probably be for OLD games who will run perfectly on quad aswell.

So unless you wanna buy a dual and in a year or so having to upgrade again i suggests you get a quad and hf playing NEW games
Parent
that's exactly what I also think :p
Parent
quad > double, cause 4 > 2. its not that hard.
Call of Duty 4 Supports only DUO not QUAD

Random Dual Core: 3,0 GHZ 100e
Random Quad Core: 2,4 GHZ 100e

So in some occasians it's not.
Parent
i dont care. i'd buy quad anyway.
Parent
you guys are overrating they importance of cpus, just get decent rams and gfx since most games need these more than latest cpu that u will never see it's maximum
Parent
cpu IS LIKE THE BRAIN OF HUMAN, THE HEART, WITHOUT A GOOD CPU YOUR PC WORTH NOTHING
soz for caps, not bothered to re write
Parent
oh plz, and u are saying that u actually use the fucking 3 GHz that the cpu has? eg or maybe ram and cpu are related to each other and with shit ram u can have megaprocpu but it works on maybe 25 % of it's power coz of ram
Parent
except from 1gb to t2gb, having more RAM does NOT improve ANYTHING in game
you obviously know nothing, dont make a fool out of yourself
Parent
i wasn't talking about the amount of ram but the amount of mhz tardo
Parent
oh ye i was browsing inet, forgot to add stuff about CPU
Parent
E6300! :]]
Plz, this is like the worst place to ask anything about hardware.

Dual core ofc. Quad cores are for cf noobs whose logic is based on 4 > 2 thinking. You wont get any advantage from it unless you are into rendering. So if you are a basic gamer like most of us, buy dual core and save money.
k but if I get it right, a quad core will not be worse to play games with than a dual core?!

my brother is a photshop user so quadcore is also good for him ;)
Parent
Ofc quad isnt worse than dual. If you have a budget for it, buy a quad core. Still I think getting a quad is a bit too early.
Parent
you know what annoys me, the clear choice is E8500, but its so fucking annoying that you know not too far away youe E8500 will be a piece of junk compare to a Q9550 for example that you could purchase
should have never released a quad :/
Parent
tbh quad would be MUCH better than duo if it ain't got such a high price different, why?
there NO 'huge' differences between E8500 and Q9550, switching between each process wont change your life, and Q is just a promise for life
currently every + is for duo, high OC, better cooling, more effective etc, but if you are playing on a very high resolution, i myself would get an Q9550, as the higher the res, the more GFX will take advantage over the CPU

in short: get E8500 and OC it, im also planing on buying a pc, but im not going fot the E8500 like i planned, instead im prolly having an i7, beats every duo, + its quad
Parent
none, untill core i7 will be released
the RAM etc is gonna be fucking expensive for it I heard so no thxs
Parent
yeah, who gives a shit, after the core i7 release, prices will drop by 30%...go waste your money now if u want
Parent
but then I have to wait 3more months :s too long
Parent
monday is the expected release
Parent
I don't think prices will already drop very hard in the first 3months... and still it will be more expensive than a quad core and for what I'm gonna do a quad will be good enough don't you think? (in my profile you can see all specs that I'm thinking about buying, you have some comments on it, send it in pm pls :))
Parent
for Vista we had to wait some months more after release date.
what about Intel?
Parent
you can already purchase the i7 on sites............
Parent
Ye, just like the 8800GT I preordered, had to wait another 2 months. The i7 is going to be just an hype like the GT
Parent
there is no preorder, sites already purchased the core i7 systems, and CPU compare to gfx are totaly different
+ 2 8800GT can match an 260GTX
Parent
link to site please.
Parent
crap language.
so it's being sold in the "unpopulated" countries?
Parent
crap language.

so its being sold in "third world" countries?
Parent
i got a 6.6 ghz quadcore its fine
Quad isnt yet what it should be, will take some more time...

I'd say dual
I was wondering if anyone would actually make that reply :)
Parent
dual, unless you have too much money on your hands ;)
to much, is it possible?
Parent
no I don't have too much money but I prefer paying more asek dan de pc wa langer kan gebruiken e :)
Parent
Lol at changing your taal int midde van ne zin
Parent
Core 2 Duo mate, you wont need quadcore for at least 1 1/2 years :D
and upgrade ur pc in 1 1/2 years? kinda waste, imo go for a bit more expencive and have this pc for a longer time
and an extra core is always useful, it 's not that u only play with ur pc
Parent
You will still only need the quad core in 1 /2 years time for pure graphics work.

For gaming etc, you will need quad in 3 years or so. Then you only need to get a processor and thatll be 100$
Parent
you're buying a computer together with ur brother?

dual core for gaming imo
Actually it's my PC which he thinks he'll be able to use aswell
Parent
Get a good Core 2 Duo, Will be good for everything.
I can only say that quadcore fcking owns.
dual wied
depends
AMD 2500+
FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaAaaAAAAaa
Parent
I'd def. go for quad, but I do render stuff and so on.
I have Q6600 2.40ghz but its overclocked to 3.30Ghz
Same !

(except that I upped it to ~3,6)
Parent
Still on air cooling? I might have to try that! I have the Antech Twelve Hundred case its uber cool!
Parent
Yup, air cooling.

My case is the Antec Sonata III and I've changed the usual intel fan with an OCZ Vendetta (@ 12V) !
Parent
What temps you running at in idle and also after a session of gaming?
Parent
idle : 30°/32°
burn : depends which game... between 50°-60°
Parent
90% of the guys who replied don't even know that actually, even vista doesn't fully support a quad core with the 64bits version. Take a e8400 and it will be ok for at least 1year except if you are working on videos making or so
If I were you I would take Core i7 920. Better than Quad Extreme QX9770 and about 4 times cheaper.
Is a brand new socket, so involves buying a new mobo, probably DDR3 ram to get the most out of it too. So the money saved is spent v. quickly :D Plus, it's the first revision so they're likely to improve it in the not too distant future. (hellooooo g0 stepping!)
Parent
Well, i7 920 is for about 600 $, qx9770 is for about 2000 $ so there's a little difference. You won't spend so much money on new mobo and ddr3 I think (well, i'm not really up-to-date with that things).
Parent
It's not really better, you can't really overclock Core i7's (e.g. 920) yet whereas you can up Core 2's (e.g. QX9770) to +11GHz :D
Parent
you can the core i7 965 to 7ghz ^^ the other two are hard to overclock
Parent
+11GHz > 7GHz

imo.

:D
Parent
yeah true, but ghz aint everything ^^ its better than the QX by far anyways :P (just wanted to show the extreme core i7 can be overclocked nicely^^)
Parent
E8500 Overclocked @ 3.80Ghz
