I'm doing a shopping cart right now too for school :o

Front-End PHP
Back-End .NET 2.0
DB: MSSQL

had to do much work but finally its ready :)
how can the front end of a website be written in PHP? :P
Parent
you can connect PHP with MSSQL easily

almost same functions as MYSQL :)

you can even call Stored Procedures of MSSQL
Parent
What's the use of the .NET tech then?
Parent
Front End area were people login and buy stuff was coded with PHP.
Back End area were the Administrators can add products etc.. was coded with ASP.NET 2.0

since we study both PHP and ASP.NET 2.0, the teachers combined their assignments in 1

Ah I see, was a bit confused seeing php and asp.net do a lot of similar things.

Seems like auction websites are quite a popular choice for educations, we had to make one last year as well.
