its just a hobby like reading books or watching series. Whats good about them? I guess they have a plot that i cant find in normal 'american' cartoons. American cartoons are all the same, directed mostly to children (dont tell me south park is for adults please) while anime (not all ofc) has something that can entertain more mature receivers.

Still i havent watched anime for a long time now since i prefer reading manga. Too many times ive witnessed how you can fuck up a good story.

For me it's because of the way the plot is presented. the genres are not that different, there is scifi, supernatural stuff, love, comedy, sports and so on. The Japanese kind of humor is an important factor as well, they are just great in inserting random comedy events, which is greatly supported by the use of different animation and sound effects. Furthermore, the voice actors, are, once you get used to them, just awesome.

Gah, it's too damn difficult to explain why watching animes is so enjoyable. :E
Best way is just to check out some animes based on your personal genre preference.

Yeah, you're actually very likely to stumble upon nothing but really bad series if you try watching a couple of random ones.

That's like watching a couple of random TV programs (just open random channel at random time and start watching - very likely to be something boring).

Remember there are genres in anime as well, I pretty much vomit upon every comedy/romance anime I've happened to see, only some action/horror series aimed at mature audiences have kept me interested.
