60hz monitor

My monitor is pumping out a massive 60hz refresh rate. (Will not change monitor, am using a gaming laptop, have done for years, not going to change)

What other settings should I be using, if any, to make the most of this? I've seen various settings posted to link your maxpackets, resolution and maxfps with refresh rate.

125 fps is the best what you can do ;[
how's dpi connected with hz? :XD
I am not allowed to tell you, otherwise you will be as highskilled as me. :(

Parent

Parent
gimme another one
Parent
traded it for ET '03 (didnt know it was free) :/

whats the point of playing with 125 fps with only 60hz?
id go for 76 or maybe 60
because FPS is linked to more factors than merely frames drawn per second?

It also has a massive effect on your mouse input, whether you see those frames or not you can definitely feel the difference

LOL ! A TFT MONITOR DOESN`T USE A DISPLAYREFRESH XD
my cfg @ my profile, optimized for a laptop as i play with a laptop @ 60hz

+ you can experiment with the com_fps, but i suggest 60 as it feels the smoothest to me
to paraphrase sock, playing on a laptop is like playing underwater, avoid using a crt at any point and you might not realise how crippled it is :\
So now that we've established that, are there any settings I should be using to make the most of my crappy monitor.
Parent
on my lcd which I rarely use these days (lans etc) i use 1280x800@75hz (although i should try 960x600)

I think it's pretty much standard after that

i tried playing maxfps 76 once but it felt like shit compared to 125, i don't understand how people can say it's better... maybe I'm too used to it but mouse input feels a lot better at 125
Parent
Using a 4:3 resolution with 100 fov on a 16:10 LCD would be better than a widescreen res in et imo.
Parent
i never understood that argument... maybe if you only had a day to adjust to LCD or something, eg, lan, but if you have time to adjust then running in the correct aspect ratio is just... it's just correct... i don't understand why you wouldn't...
Parent
It doesn't look great however since when is Et about looks?

A 4:3 resolution will simply give you a greater vertical fov. Combining this with 100 fov makes it look more like 90 fov on a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Parent
i think you mean higher vertical fov... since in a 16:10 resolution you get way more horizontal field of view

The horizontal fov is the same if you stretch it however the vertical fov is increased.

Edit : screenshots done with etmain, hence the big head..

Quote by John Carmack

I added support for HDTV style wide screen displays in QuakeArena, so 24" and 28" monitors can now cover the entire screen with game graphics.

On a normal 4:3 aspect ratio screen, a 90 degree horizontal field of view gives a 75 degree vertical field of view. If you keep the vertical fov constant and run on a wide screen, you get a 106 degree horizontal fov.

Because we specify fov with the horizontal measurement, you need to change fov when going into or out of a wide screen mode. I am considering changing fov to be the vertical measurement, but it would probably cause a lot of confusion if "fov 90" becomes a big fisheye.

Many video card drivers are supporting the ultra high res settings like 1920 * 1080, but hopefully they will also add support for lower settings that can be good for games, like 856 * 480.

I spent a day out at apple last week going over technical issues.

I'm feeling a lot better about MacOS X. Almost everything I like about rhapsody will be there, plus some solid additions.

I presented the OpenGL case directly to Steve Jobs as strongly as possible.

If Apple embraces OpenGL, I will be strongly behind them. I like OpenGL more than I dislike MacOS. :)

More modern games do this automatically, even Q3 engine games like CoD2.

ET doesn't... which is why you change the fov when you play in widescreen.
Parent
Hence the reason I use a 4:3 resolution.
Parent
suit yourself... if you prefer it use it

it's still incorrect though

If you're talking about aspect ratio then I agree. Do you really care if you are shooting at circles or ellipses?
Parent
it just feels weird when what is normally 10 pixels width is actually more like 15 but on the vertical plane pixels feel like they have a constant height....

dunno I just don't like it, preference as i said
