Well my main point was actually that competing wasn't the reason the sport was invented, but I did kinda use beating the shit out of someone as a reference to competing ye :P

tbh i would say that ufc (mma) has shown that martial arts really can be used for self defence, Royce Gracie prooved that when he won some of the first ufc tournaments using brazilian jiu jiutsu, founded by his daddy and his uncle, by beating people much bigger than him, such as Kimo Leopoldo
