next O/S

Hello,

Well, its time for my annual PC formatting.

Since this is like my 5th time formatting this computer and im pretty sick of windows i was wondering if any of you guys had Linux and whats your opinion on it..

Is it any good? Would you suggest that ill try it my self?
Why Ubuntu is better then XP? or vice versa

If it matter you can check my computer spec on my profile.

Would love some good reviews/bench marks/comparisons/etc. :)

Thanks, good night!

Don't format. I've got files from 2003 and it's still working ;-D
you know, you are allowed more than one harddrive in your pc, and then said harddrives can be partitioned separately

fredd would say yes!
windows
windows?
to use Linux properly you need to learn it (the same you had to learn windows when you started using it)

if you can't be bothered with the investment, just use XP

XP can provide a very functional desktop if you use litestep or blackbox as a shell replacement.
I do have the time to learn it, i was just wondering if it worths it.
btw whats litestep/blackbox?

Download a liveCD before installing to see if you like L1n|_|x first.
Go here to do a quick test to see what may be suitable for you!

There are a ton of linux users on here that'd help you out, or you could check the ubuntu forums (that isn't just for ubuntu folks!)
tell me more about that livecd

u download the image file, burn it on a cd and then boot your pc fromt it and u can use linux but ofc much slower etc
Parent
Not much slower no! Don't know why every say that, I've never experienced much difference while doing so:

Jewballs; basically you download the image file like anzz said and run Linux from the CD without installing anything. Useful if you want to see what Linux/certain distro is like without installing it over your current OS/duel bo0t
Parent
well, but it's booting longer :D

I don't think livecd's are useful ;D The most interesting thing for me when choosing distro was the way the system of packages are working, and whether distro has any stupid gui which always crashes and which I alwyays avoid :D But I don't know, I hate using ubuntu, so I'm different (my favourite distro is arch linux).

lol :D
I use linux on my pendrive for work as I hate their shitty computers up there, handy enough for me and works a charm \o/
Parent
Oh well, ye, that makes sense - you can have your own things/settings/progz wherever you are :) I was referring to the liveCD for test purposes - I found it much better to check thingz on my own, since you always can try few linuxes by replacing them, and the download size isn't really bigger ;)

I've learned over the years that it's useless to recommend Ubuntu or any other Linux distro to people who don't know why Linux is better than Windows...
y iz linucks better dan windows?
Parent
Don't get this guy started we could do without another linux nerd raging!
Parent
too late!

but i'm not as bad as meez

Windows is good for people who don't program or don't use their PC for anything more than playing games and surfing the net (etc.)

This is why linux is better:

1. No Viruses - Thats true! as Linux does not recognize Win32 Executables so the possibility of having a virus on-board is absolutely 0%
2. Open Source - Unlike Windows, Linux distributions are open source and the source code can be edited and modified to the most to suit your needs.
3. Better Learning - While Windows just teaches you how to install and run a program, Linux helps you do that using a Terminal. So if you fall in a situation where you don't have a GUI, you can operate things well.
4. Free Software - Every application and software on Linux is free and open source. You don't need to worry about licenses anymore and you can always find a better and free Linux alternative to a Windows application.
5. Easy to Use - This point may seem ironic but is true to a lot of extent. Linux Ubuntu is one of the most user-friendly and easy to use Linux distribution which even beats Windows XP and Vista in usability and ease of use.
6. Ubuntu Community Help - Ubuntu has a very active support and help community where you can get answer to your questions and problems in minutes.
7. Cool Desktop Effects - For those who think Aero in Windows Vista is damn cool! wait till you experience Compiz on Ubuntu which provides better 3D desktop effects with less resource usage.
8. Easy Upgrade - You can upgrade Linux Ubuntu through the package manager and all applications can be installed/updated through it. There is no need to Google for freewares as the package manager helps you find all of them.
9. Highly Customizable - If you like customizing your operating system without a billion registry and software hacks then Ubuntu is your ultimate choice.
10. Experience Live - Linux Ubuntu CDs come with a pre-installed OS environment which allows you to run the OS without even installing it. Carry your Ubuntu Live CD with you and use it on any PC anywhere around the world.

oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck here we go again
Parent
You didn't have to reply, was only playing around :(
I know my reasons why I stick to Linux.
Parent
If you want games you have to stick to windows, or at least dual OS.

Quote1. No Viruses - Thats true! as Linux does not recognize Win32 Executables so the possibility of having a virus on-board is absolutely 0%

the explanation why there are no viruses is stupid tbh.. a virus doesn't have to be a win32 executable, there can also be a virus in the ELF executable format which would run on linux. the chances aren't 0% either.. linux viruses aren't popular, so the chances of getting one are very, very, very small (compared to amount of windows viruses)
Parent
I know, I didn't write that though, just quickly copy pasted it.
Parent
nobody would recommend linux to someone who uses his PC for games usually
Parent
unless it's just Q3 engine based games or old stuff!
Parent
naaah-
.. trust in windows
linux etc are good programss aswell but i would recommend windows because a lot of fkn programms dont run at linux etc
They don't?
Parent
I've learned over the years that it's useless to recommend Windows or any other microsoft distro to people who don't know why Windows is better than Linux...
install both and dual boot
If everyone who made a "why linux"/"what distro would you recommend"/"is linux better" journal/topic would stick to linux, by now crossfire would be a linux community.

But it isn't :)

Not that it's not worth learning linux, but if you want to play newer games windows is a must. And dualbooting is annoying as hell.
Instead of duel-booting they could always set up a VMware server and run wind0ze on there \o
Parent
Ye I know... I used photoshop for example with virtualbox, and it wasn't *THAT* slower.

But, I was talking about "newer games" ;) Directx support at guest OS is still a beta stage feature which works too slow or just don't work ;)
Parent
Only games I bother with is ET and live for speed so it's no biggie for me \o/
Photoshop CS2/3 works fine for me under wine, just wish CS4 did :(
Parent
Whatever it's worth, I've never met anyone who truly used and learned it who wants to go back to windows.
I did because my drivers didn't worked.
Parent
Well, did you truely use it and learn it? By that I don't mean you know where the menus are, but you actually understand the whole system?
