if everyone used said open source OS you wouldn't need to waste your spare time writing dirty hacks for old game engines to achieve dinput, it's native!

and the "trying to be cool" argument around linux is pretty illogical as it just makes the initiator seem to have a pretty big insecurity complex for believing other people think like that in the first place

First of all i would not call it a dirty hack, i guess you should read more about detouring as it's basically simple assembly. Second of all games like rtcw and q3 don't support native input (on *nix) out of the box. Besides it was a project for me to write a dll injector and this was one of the simplest forms of a proof of concept. I didn't write dinput for anyone on this website but myself.

Too bad, but probably the next 10 years will be in microsoft hands. I'd rather see open source OS's growing.

Opensource (not specifically linux) is gainng a lot of ground recently I think. I've noticed software like OpenOffice mentioned a lot more in the real world, and the stories of MS marketting teams phoning up companies to try and dissuade them from using opensource software using FUD makes them seem a little worried for once.

You are probably right though. I'll just keep using whichever I find more productive, which will probably be Linux as the W7 beta hasn't really drawn me in yet (better than Vista but... still not really worth leaving XP for)
