would have seen them last year at Graspop, if it wasn't for them to cancel because of Mikael being ill... :S
Graspop line-up this years sucks fucking donkeyballs btw.
opeth owns beyond words.
I'll see em in istanbul soon.
the reason I said for me aekerfeldt is new shuldiner is he is the only one who is doing something different, progressive, full of melody+soul in death metal. "Lotus Eater" from the last album is where death metal should go imo...
I see you dont listen to opeth since damnation, and I suddenly have my idea about your music taste :P ofc its a shock to get something like damnation from a death metal band, but for being honest he is doing the ballads better then the best whatever ballad band out there as well...
Also I love him on stage where he acts very down to earth and not like some rockstar asshole wanna be...
About metal going mainstream, well it did have some fucked up effects on music, but also being the underground "I listen to bands that noone even heard of" metal dude is so 90s :P
2nd Death's lyrics are gore/death with a little bit of prog influences oriented (thus its death metal mixed with some prog later on) while Opeth's lyrics are only prog. Because Akerfeld uses harsh vocals (though i admit that he has got one of the best death metal voices Ive ever heard) doesnt necessarily mean that his band is a death metal band.
3rd Death was all about metal staying underground. Opeth is clearly not about that.
Im sorry, but although Opeth is an excellent band, its music does not appeal to everyone, and for me I stopped being interested in them after Damnation. Similar cases are Metallica, Slayer, Paradise Lost, Sepultura, Moonspell, Dimmu Borgir and Megadeth that i can think of that have lost their old "underground and awesome" touch.
.
Well unfortunately or fortunately for me the majority of the bands I like arent really known, and thats ok for me. The metal stereotype is that the more known the band, the bigger the "sellout" to their fans who like them for what they were originally, and not what they will become. Unfortunately that stereotype is true, there are rare cases in which a band doesnt sell out by becoming more popular.
anyway :D im not a really big death metal fan, but some bands that i like that you must check out are Bolt thrower, Immolation, Krisiun, Nile, Obituary, Pestilence, Unleashed, Vader, Yogth sothoth, and last but not least, The Chasm. Try to compare them with Opeth :)
This is the result of metal going mainstream.
also death didnt have that much gore lyrics after human, and altho pull the plug and zombie ritual are cool :), for me death has become death after human. 3 albums after human made me paralized each time I wondered how will he exceed himself this time....still a sad a thing to remember he died so early :(
being underground: well this is kinda hard and I on the theorical level believe going mainstream somewhat destroys some of the things. on the other hand its not only about the band as well, since the MTV generation was not ready for the sound of the "distortion guitars" and loud music, but they have gotten used to it so its not the bands that are leaving their undergrouns state but also the ppl are listening different stuff as well. And once more ppl like the band, that you were being looked down upon because you liked them , gets popular, u feel betrayed, and yea it happened to me as well. I cant stand metallica for instance...and each time they say something like "uh oh we are going back to our roots" I wanna slap hetfield+ulrich senseless.
the reason I like opeth is because music used to be very important for me, then somehow I stopped listening to new stuff at some point I dunno why. and like years later, some 6 months ago I DLed opeth albums and aekerfeldt seemed to be doing the forumula I adore in music : progressive+technical+soul+melody....
btw from he bands you counted my fav is definetly pestilence , the album that has "land of tears" in it was so ownage :)
go discover global warming :~>
