That's actually very good way to practice. At least when I'm high I ignore everything surrounding me and can concentrate 100% on the thing I'm doing (which in this case is some jamming with guitar).
AF will just burn down in seconds if there's no foil between the tobacco and the coal. You need atleast 3-4 layers to smoke it properly, and then the head shouldn't be much fuller than 1/2, max 3/4.
You usually only put the coal directly on the tobacco when you're using natural tobaco, not the flavoured one.
I wouldn't buy such a small one as my home pipe either, for traveling or some parties they will do just fine, as they don't cost much when ppl break them.
At home I got a Nargilem TN610, for parties or so a MYA Mini Orb and I'm going to get a Nargilem ECO 300 soon. :-)

mine was about 40 cm high, before some mother fucker broke it @ party
30-60cm pipes will do just fine for most tobaccos.
