If you would mess a bit with QL/Q3 settings, you'd be more confident with your settings in ET.

I'm not playing Quake really much, so the Quake configuration is much simpler than my ET configuration.
r_flareFade is cheat protected
r_flareSize is cheat protected
r_ambientScale is cheat protected
r_zfar is cheat protected
etc.
and when you play a demo you want to have the best settings for highest graphics so you start a cheat server where you dont have any restrictions
anyway im not a demo player
why not 1024*768?
