Western Digital WD TV Media Player

This is the coolest thing ever! It's a box that hooks up to your TV via HDMI, then you attach an external HD and play all your movies or whatever you want from the HD no more burning dvds!

There's even firmware out there that make it take a USB ethernet card so you can just drag and drop stuff on from your pc.

it's only 85 euros over here so if it plays most formats it's a really great option for anyone who doesn't have other access to a video source (laptop, long pc monitor cable etc.). would've actually considered buying one if we didn't have a spare computer that's hooked up to our tv.
Yea this is exactly why I want to get one, for downstairs I don't wanna run a huge wire my room to the living room, so the box solves that.

oh wow
had 1 for like 6 months matey. they work great! only thing is , you can only use blu-rays up to 1080i , some 1080p's work, but not all for some reason. vthe remote control works fine and youre right, i cant say enough good things about em. misco even had a sale on em, £100 now for the 500 gig, and i hear theres a 1tb +1.5tb out soon as well :)
I got it, but when i plug the hdmi cable in, it doesnt automaticly uses the settings. It says its not supported. When i plug it in with composite, it works as a charm. But when i set the settings to hdmi it doesnt remember it, so i cant with tru hdmi:<
Any solutions? Already have the setting at: automaticly

get what i have which is the popcorn hour, it does absolutely everything, my home setup right now is:
TV:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=television&type=television&subtype=ledtv&model_cd=UE40B7020WWXXU
PS3 for bluray dvd and gaming
Sky HD
PopCorn Hour for playing my downloaded HD 1080p mkv movies and it also support DTS-HD output
ONKYO AV Receiver and KEF speakers
I have these connected up using gigabit cable to my study where i have one of these:
Netgear ReadyNAS NV+
http://www.dabs.com/products/netgear-readynas-nv--3tb-gigabit-desktop-storage--4x750gb-hdd--nas-501S.html?refs=50542-52020000
Except i bought and put in 4 x 2TB hard drives so in the raid array i get about 5.5TB usable space and this can link direct to the popcorn hour so pulls directly from here.

Result = HD ultimate home setup imo

PS3 + Wireless Connection + HD TV = win
I use the Xtreamer. More features, and newer Realtek chipset.

If you put a 600mb dvdrip on your HD and let it play on your TV, how is the quality then?
already got a HTPC setup ;-;
sucks tbh
Parent
what sucks? my htpc rocks
Parent
ok maybe a bit harsh but i seriously dont think much of htpc machines

+1 for sneakernet
my PS3 has been doin that for years.
a ps3 is 300 euro, this is 80.
Parent
believe me, the extra is worth it. best device I ever bought...It is my media system connected up to a receiver and 5.1 surround.
Parent
thats not true at all the ps3 cant play mkv files which the majority of high def files are, you have to convert it first
Parent
what did I say thats not true? AND its takes a few mins to convert an mkv file using gotsent to PS3 MP4...AND you can play mkv files with the latest update, albeit without pause/ff functions etc.

I'll say again, best device I ever bought.
