Graphix carD

So I've recently bought THIS for my setup, now all I need left is a graphics card.
Being out of the loop the last few years ( didn't even know nvidia made anything after 9 series :( ) I need a bit of advice.
Everyone seems to say go for ATI HD 4 something but never had an ATI card so don't know who's in the 'lead'. Looking to spend ~£100 max.

Possibly something like this or this.

Thankenstein

I'd pay an extra 30 quid for this
There's no real difference between these 2 is there? http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-265S

I may opt for this one now having seen a few reviews and benchmarks =]

I am not sure, but gainwood are a very reliable manufacturer (replaced two of my cards when they broke).

HD4870/4890/5770 or pay a bit more for the hd5850 ;--))
btw the gts250 is just a new name for the old nvidia 9800gtx
The 9800gtx+ was a very good card.
Parent
it was ye but nvidia cards suck with anti alaising :(
this is why I bought the hd4870 instead of the 9800gtx+ :D
Parent
who uses anti aliasing :D?
Parent
i wouldn't say very very good. The last decent card from nvidia was 8800GT bcuz ATi just smashed them on a price/performance level

So that 4870 I linked was quite good? I don't want to go spending 'a little more' on something else as you could keep saying that for most things, adding a few extra quid will get you something newer etc, so trying to limit my budget to that!

the hd4870 with 512mb ram is fine as long you don't use a high resolution
Parent
Quite a few people say it gets hot + it's a big card :( So not sure now!
I've only got an old 17" lcd running at 1024x768 atm LOL but will get a new monitor soon!

Can't really see the 9800 gtx+ for sale :(
Parent
idd, the hd series gets quite hot with the ati cooler (like this one http://pcgeek.de/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ati-radeon-hd-4870-x2.jpg )
so look out for 1 hd4870 with 1gb vram and vapor cooler
( looks like this http://www.itdisti.com/image2/HD4870%20Vapor-X%202GB%20DDR5.jpg )

the 9800gtx+ is also known as gts250 btw ;P

So the one I was looking at would be hawt? Has 2 fans on this version but 512MB one

How about that gts250? Seems a cheaper option but still pretty big. Just checked my psu and has the 2x pci-e connectors with it so can use those cards fine!

Cheers for your help btw <3

the hd4870 is better when anti alaising is turned on
else they are quite equal :P

Word of warning, with the ATI 48xx and 38xx series there have always been problems with overheating.

I was playing GTA4 online with a friend, when half way through a mission he just vanished and came back 10 minutes later and said his graphics card crashed his game, he checked his temps before his PC shutdown and they were at 100-110 :D

Think it was some manufacturer of ATI cards that instead of using aluminium piping, they just painted copper piping silver! :D
Parent
Ouch :(
Think I've made my mind up now and getting the gtx 260 :)
Parent
lol :)
just buy one with decent cooling or take a look at accelero s1
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_&mID=105&language=en

lowered my load temps from 85°c to 50°c

just go for better cooling (HIS ftw), the two cooler cooling is not standard, it will delivery much better cooling performance and you may go for it, although it will be louder than a single cooler is.

I would go for the ATi HD5770, HD4850 like preformance but then with dx11 support
