looking for packetfilter

hoi.

i'm looking for a simple packet filter for win xp.
like zone alarm - if a programm wants to connect to the internet, a screen should pop up where i can choose from allow or block.

dont want to use the xp built-in-firewall or zone alarm (heard too many negative opinions about it)...

i tested the comodo firewall, but it seems to be to big for my needs... :s maybe i just misconfigured it, dont know.

u could try outpost 4.0, pretty old but i didn't enjoy newer one. with simple antivirus like avast it works perfectly.
is there a free version 4? i only find the newest one...

may i ask u, why xp firewall seems to be not ok?
random exploit could avoid this 'firewall'.
Parent
ok, but how does it look practically? how do u feel the difference?

well personally i use outpost for ~4-5 years by now. during that time i tested many pcs with windows firewall but they were running slower, more unstable etc. For example when you scanned with antivirus/aspyware u always had something detected. I'm not saying it's a rule, but mostly was like this. Anyway with proper firewall (e.g outpost) i'm able to make stable os for couple of years w/o: formatting/scanning/defragmentating and so on.

hmm. i reinstall my win every 3 month anyway. so i even dont need any antivirus programms and everything seems to work fine.

well it's up to you but w/o antivir & firewall i don't even put in my inet cable. Especially in fact i have stable ip, so fw is necessary. you don't even know how much wannabe attacks, scanned ports etc you had while surfing. it's also useful because it has a real-time anti-spyware protection, blocking ads, it doesn't make ur pc slower and is based on creating rules wizard so it's rly friendly.

honestly i don't even know you so theres no point of lying, but its just simply safier with properly configurated os (instead of format every 3 months :p), cheers.

ok i understand. thx for the info. btw, what about outpost firewall pro 1.0? it is for free.

packetfilter?
wireshark ? cain & able ?

or firewalls?
then i would use comodo or KIS (but thats more than a firewall + shareware)
