You should just keep the minimum necessary. Let's take the mods example: I have only installed the mods that are really needed(such as etpro or ettv). Some basic configuration should do and the server location is very important(mine is hosted in Germany).

I don't have a server at the moment, but when I had one (was from YCN-Hosting hosted in Germany) it was working great : - p
