sound card prob?

hey guys
so lately i've had this problem..
my computer starts up, everything is fine. i open up ET or WoW or some other mega fun game and play for like 1 hr.
then i close the game. everything that was open from this point on still has sound. however, if i open anything new, it's sound wont work. windows still makes those gay beeps and clicks when you open folders, etc.
now the really strange thing is that if i open my devices, it shows that i dont have a sound card. it says i no longer have a sound card.
if i open my sound drivers, it still shows my sound card and what's plugged into which spots.
ideas anybody?

perhaps try to reinstall / actualize the drivers.

don't hate the playa, hate the game :P
update drivers, shit can go wrong at any point - I randomly got sound flickering at one point out of nowhere. rather annoying ;)
