Manchester United will be kicking themselves after throwing away a dream start against Bayern Munich in the first leg. Wayne Rooney scored with just over a minute on the clock and then in the second half deflected the ball into his own net from a needless free kick given away by Gary Neville. And then the United defence turned off in the second minute of injury time to allow Ovica Olic to score an important second goal ahead of the second leg tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday (7 April 2010).

In fairness to Bayern Munich, they did have the bulk of the possession and came close to scoring on a number of occasions and are deserving of their slender lead. United too though had their chances no more so than Nemanja Vidic whose power header from a Ryan Giggs corner rattled the bar.

This means the second leg is nicely poised. United have the away goal in the bag and Bayern have the one-goal advantage. It is unlikely that United will allow the German team as much space in midfield as they did in Munich and Bayern will be aware that if they can keep a clean sheet then they are through. They will also be aware that if they get an early goal that could kill United off. The most likely scenario therefore is that Bayern will start off in much the same way as they did at home, trying to attack United but if the score stays at 2-1 they will adopt a more defensive posture. From United’s point of view, they will be keen to get an early equaliser on which they can build. Expect an exciting first half at least.
