Depends what needs to be done. Here's a list of programs I've used and have had success with:

VirtualDJ (For mixing 2 tracks together with switchovers & scratching soundfx)
Fruity Loops (Beat sequencer & track mastering, mainly for making your own beats - very good for beginners)
Ableton Live (Sequencer & track mastering, complicated to some, but taking the time to master this program will pay off, really good)
revvie meight tell him to try MusicMeister best porgram to create/mix . :)
Parent
tell him to start with virtual dj
will tell him that <33 i love 1of the songs that u made, but only1 XD
Parent
only know mac programs :(

probably virtual dj..
good would be for example:

virtual dj and ableton for live mixing,
ableton or fl studio for producing
mixmeister or ableton for offline mixing
thats my chick revee
edit
also belongs to Juize and znAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArk
idd!

wtf is this shit, posting our chick.. :S
Parent
Fruity Loops xD
also , cheater gtfo!
Parent
no idea!
ignore the rest:
DJing: Traktor Pro
Production: Samplitude 11

these are the absolute best. there is no competition to traktor (better than virtual dj), and there are plenty of good DAW's but samplitude is the best (its for windows only btw).

and here are essential VSTs:
NI Battery for drums
NI Kontact for other samples
NI Massive for synth (great for electronic base like dnb, dubstep, electro etc)

Most DAWs have decent VSTs already included also, it all depends how you use things really.

MIDI keyboard also very very useful if he gets serious.

This is the best site for audio software + libraries: http://keepthemfree.net/audio-and-music .. 227 pages of them
whats the difference between traktor and vdj?

downlaoded traktor but it was much more complicate than i expected...

which features are new @ traktor?
Parent
you can download traktor pro 1.21, its not complicated once you get the hang of it -- biggest change is a nicer interface (less customisable but you dont need to cause the design is already great). Few more effects too but not that important.

here are my traktor settings (dont worry, mostly default): http://rapidshare.com/files/373237659/settings.tsi

Some useful shortcuts I use for when you dont have a midi mixer (in the settings already):
Numpad 1: slowly move crossfader left
Numpad 3: slowly move crossfade right
Numpad 4: Flick crossfader left
Numpad 5: Flick crossfader center
Numpad 6: Flick crossfader right
Numpad 7: Play/Pause Deck A
Numpad 9: Play/Pause Deck B
Space: Play/Pause current deck

^^ Very useful for mouse DJing, so you can be working with effects and do crossfader at same time. For example increasing the beatmasher effect with mouse so drum gets faster and faster, and then do the switch over with your fingers etc
Parent
One more essential thing for mixing: a soundcard with 4 channels - this is so you can hear the other deck(s) in the headphones before the audience.. or your recording can so you can prepare the mix!

Reason 4, Very good software to create your own/edit music.
there isnt a best program, if you can make music you can make it with any program.
if you suck you will make bad with even with expensive programs (take a look at superblanik for example).
for starters i would recommend fruity loops.
mixing without beatmatching is lame.
garage band for Mac
i use traktor scratch pro, midi controller & timecode vinyls for my mixing stuff

ableton and ni maschine for my producing shizzle.

but if u are talented u can use ANY software to make good music.
hast du nich 1210ers da stehen?^^
Parent

Parent
hör in die tracknamen rein, das is prog ;-)
naja, ich überlege sowieso die cdj400 zu kaufen. Die ganze Zeit nen PC mitzuschleppen is definitv kacke...Ich mag kein DVS.

Parent
If your a retard. Sony Vegas is harder to use than Reason 4, and Sony Vegas is simple :)
cubase
reason
for remixing and stuff:

FL / ableton /cubase

for DJing:

Definitely TRAKTOR.
I use traktor scratch pro my self and i just have to say that traktor is the best solution. many (known) DJs use it, e.g. carl cox.Just save money and buy traktor.

The solution with the most style is having vinyl.
CD is awesome too,
but vinyl is just the coolest thing around :D
yes, too bad i broke both needles on our vinyl players :(
still mixing without beatmachting is lame imo.
Parent
i use a controller and i use the sync button.
But i can handle cd players/turntables as well!
A friend of mine taught me pitchriding.
So I dont touch the record/platter and just use the pitchcontrol.
Cost me 3 months to be able to do it perfectly.
With a controller it isnt possible because the pitch isnt accurate enough.
which turntables do u got?
Parent
i got poineer cdj 100s (the cheapest, but still good stuff). and reloop vinyl players. But if you dont have money its fun to do with traktor, but still i dont think you will be able to play with cd players if you always play with a midi controller.
Parent
cdj 100 have 0.1 pitch resolution...the tracks start going out of each other after something like a minute...thats not really cool...my friend got cdj400s and they are godlike <3...
traktor is just enough for me at the moment...i am pupil and i cant buy cdjs yet... but im saving money to buy some reloop rmp2s in the next time..
Parent
mmm but if i can mix on cdj 100s its only gonna be easier on better players so thats good. but 2 cdj 100s + a mixer is like 250 euro and there good to learn mixing with, i can mix quite good now.
Parent
ye, for the beginning its more than enough!
what kind of music do u mix?
Parent
mm not really sticking to genres, somewhere between techno house trance dubstep 2step minimal :p
Parent
if you can hear which track is slower and which is faster, you will never not be able to do this :D
Parent
I actually have worked with Reason 4, well Reason 2, but they are pretty much the same with some alternations. If you know what you are looking to/create, it is quite simple, Just use tutorials and use a lot of time to experiment.

And i am a top DJ producer, i produce Teisto's music in my spare time, im that big.
