Mike Dean demoted

image: 93661_newsReferee Mike Dean has been demoted to the Championship after another unreliable performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 potential Premier League title deciding victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Simon Beck, who was the assistant referee that missed calling back Didier Drogba’s game-winning goal over United for offside, was also sent down to the second division, according to The Guardian.

Dean, who has been amongst the top referees in the world since 2002 will be moved down due to some missed calls recently.

The referee did not give penalties to Park Ji-Sung and Nicolas Anelka this past Saturday and controversially gave a spot-kick to Blackburn’s Martin Olsson, who later publically admitted that he dove because of Dean’s propensity to award penalties.

Stoke City also criticised Dean for sending off Dean Whitehead in a loss to Tottenham earlier in the season, saying that he hoped that his team would avoid him for the rest of the season.

Dean will work as the fourth official in next Wednesday’s Premier League match between Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth.
