So, I finally got a new PC this week and am getting round to installing everything on it. So it seems a good opportunity to try new stuff.
Recommend me some 'essential' apps that you use, perhaps something different from the mainstream. Music players, desktop organizers, chat programs, anything.

vlc is AWFUL
chrome is casual

firefox (depends how much java intensive browsing you do i guess)
It's true that Firefox is better than chrome for java intensive, but most people don't browse sites that run Java often anyways. Chrome still runs faster and cleaner than any other browser I've ever tried, and that includes Firefox, IE, Opera, and Safari.
well. you're seriously wrong. vlc breaks so many standards it's untrue. it's just bad. if you want serious playback, mpc. for herp derp pc monitor only usage then well... vlc is "alright"
