Right now I'm reading Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen for the second time but I doubt that you wna read that :D
Last really good book I've read was The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. Horrifying! I can't remember a time I got so uncomfortable and angry reading a book. The fact that it's based on a true story made it even worse.
is it similar to the movie?
cause i can't recall that being horrifying =d
Parent
the book is written very well, easy to read and it makes you not wanna turn the page sometimes.
i didn't like the movie that much because you don't get to know about the feelings and the thoughts of david, but in the book it's explained very intense. gave the whole story a totally different look. but i can only speak for myself :)
Parent
Why are you reading Sense & Sensibility?
Parent
it's a part of my jane austen class at university. have to search through it for certain sayings and characteristics for my 45min presentation in 2 weeks :s could look it up on the internet aswell but i rather read it again :]
Parent
Ah, okay. I did not think anyone (at least a male) would bother reading Jane Austen unless they were forced too, or they were a literature student. I do not really like Austen, and I had to read Sense and Sensibility last year too. Good luck with your presentation!
Parent
aww thanks :)
i have to admit that she is not my favorite either, but i think her books are quite easy to read and at the beginning of the semester i had the choice between jane austen (her most influential work) and gender studies (the struggle of women in the 19th century) and i rather read her books than talking about oppressed women all day long and how they changed. :D

What and where do you study? I would have made the same decision to be honest.
Parent
i'm studying literary, cultural and media studies. it's one of the new study paths in germany, not much universities offer it yet. my studies are bascially focused on american and british history and literature with language experience classes aside. it's fun most of the time :)
Parent
Sounds good; interdisciplinary studies are the way forward. I am just about to finish a degree in English, and then I will do a postgraduate degree in either comparative/European literature, English, or linguistics - I have not quite made my mind up yet!
Parent
lol, easy books are easy, I read that shit for my school..
Parent
what exactly do you mean by "easy" book?
Parent
easy to read and understand by foreigners:D
Parent
Unfortunately, I am just rereading books that I have already read for an extended essay and for a number of exams, but given the Wikipedia description of the book I would suggest Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Double: A Petersburg Poem (1848); it is a novella (135 pages for my Dover Thrift edition) about the gradual decline of the main character into schizophrenia.
yay, schizophrenia books, give me more
Parent
To be honest, you could read most of Dostoevsky's works in that case, or perhaps look at his mentor, Nikolai Gogol, whose stories are just great fun to read.
Parent
i've only read crime and punishment from him, it was really good, don't know why i never read some more books of his :)
Parent
Crime and Punishment is probably not the best of Dostoevsky's texts to start with to be honest, and I would suggest starting from the beginning so you get a feel for how his writing developed; some of his earlier work is far more bizarre and interesting than his later, more famous works.
Parent
Cool, thanks.
