How long have you been studying the language? I've decided that I'm going to pickup a language in the new year, narrowed it down to Korean, Hebrew, Chinese or Japanese and all have their ups and downs. I wasn't thinking Japanese until I found out that my college recently recruited a Japanese teacher which means I have access to a native speaker and a lot of materials which would probably make the first 1-1.5 years a lot easier.

I was joking! Well, start with the katakana and hiragana. Then go up to simple words and simple kana. But don't believe the internet. It might be serious business, but it won't teach you decent Japanese.
