samsung are supposed to be one of the best LCD TV makers, afaik

recently got a LE40N87

edit: sound... forgot... sound depends on your budget.

Logitech Z5500's are probably the best value for money 5.1 system on the market right now

Nobody wants those ugly monsters in their living room. Fucking teenage wnb blingbling shite. Buy bang & olufson if u want style + quality
Parent
Fuck off, he was only trying to help you fucking cunt.
Parent
What is your problem mate, I dont think i attacked meez or the journalmaker in any way. I just stated my opinion. You seem awful fast with your judgements.
Parent
"Fucking teenage wnb"
Parent
isnt that my opinion? It sure as hell is not an attack on meez
Parent
function > style

I don't give a shit how something looks and never will. I also did make sure to say it depends on budget.
Parent
This guy is talking about an actual decent home-theatre system and you come with low budget logitech PC 5.1 crap, which is not what he's looking for.

If you want quality at a reasonable price, go for Tannoy speakers. Not the sattelite 5.1 set things cuz they lack the "umpf" factor, but the full range tower and center speakers.

Also make sure you got a good quality receiver to hook them up to. I'd advice to get a myryad 5.1 or 7.1 receiver but they are not in production anymore, but perhaps you can pick one up 2nd hand (I doubt it cuz most myryad users will not sell theirs ;-))

Oh and as for bang & olufsen, too expensive for the quality they offer. Plus I find their style to be stupid and targeted at the upper class, thinking they actually bought quality, but instead they spent more money on design. (just my opinion)
Parent
You blindly advice him on buying Tannoy? Even as you know, not all like what otherone likes. Most important thing, as there are big sums involved, to listen and judge based on that. You can narrow down the canditates for listen and then after you've narrowed it down take them home and listen them there. It is crucial, since the acoustic properties are unique for every room.
Parent
Most people struggle configuring an equalizer by ear, never mind determining the acoustics of a particular place.

That might be a good option for people who know their audio, but not for everyone.
Parent
It's not about that, it's what sounds good for you. Making comparisons is the easiest way, since that way you don't have to think about "is there a dip on the response here or there". Just what sounds better. It will always sound different when you get the stuff home, and as these aren't cheap, I wouldn't buy anything just blindly.
Parent
"If you want quality at a reasonable price" is not the same as advising.

The ammount of candidates for quality speakers is rather slim though and I simply said that if you want quality speakers at a reasonable price, tannoy is a good choice.

As a sidenote, my GF's dad has run a store selling classical music and sound-equipment for about 15 years. I'm sure you are aware of the fact that most ppl that are classical fanatics are sound-purists. A lot of these ppl buy Myryad receivers in combination with Tannoy speakers, but yes, you are right about personal taste in speakers.
Parent
So is Monitor Audio, Magnat, Dali, Usher.

For your latter part of the comment, well, all I can say that good for them, did they listen to anything else? Genelec? B&W+NAIM?

ps. I have Tannoy speakers
Parent
Ask my GF's dad, perhaps he knows. All I know is that most of the stuff he sold was myryad and tannoy.
Parent
fair comment, but to be fair you can't call z5500's crap... for their price range they are the best
Parent
ok not crap, but definitely not the first choice for a homecinema centre consisting of a 50" lcd or plasma tv ;)
Parent
I wish I had a home cinema system :<

5.1 headphones and a 24" lcd are as close as it gets

Downstairs we have a nice 1080p 40" LCD, and I'm trying to convince my parents to let me build a media streaming box (running linux + xbmc + wireless keyboard) and also get a 5.1 system

struggling though, these are the kinds of people who think that the stock internal speakers are "good enough"
Parent
ouch. yup, parents can be a bitch in that sense. I remember when I was still living at home and watching a movie I like the room to be as dark as possible so I always closed the blinds and dimmed the lights, but then as soon as my mom would come home she'd be mad about it and opened everything up again.

I'm currently having a 42" plasma (not 1080p unfortunately) and a 5.1 setup hooked to a mediacenter pc running mediaportal. In may or june I'm going to buy a 50" or bigger 1080p screen though :D
Parent
lol @ Logitech Z5500 ;x

I bought toshiba 47z because it was cheapest with best specs, but u could also go for sony x3500 or samsung f86
hmm i would get the 46" toshiba picture frame tv, i just bought the 40" picture frame from toshiba and it rocks
Whatever you do, buy a Full HD (1920x1080) tv. Find a few models online that you might be interested in and go to several stores to view them. Make a choice on which you find best and look for the cheapest price online.

As for sound, check my reply to meez above.
