Where to begin? This possibly is the biggest collection of talent in CoD2 to date. The best in the business are in town and the only problem is finding a winner. One of the most thrilling aspects of CoD right now is that no team has won back to back majors in more than a year. IXUS are the latest team to try to buck that trend and its with them that we'll start the journey.
IXUS make the short journey to Enschede knowing that whilst there is no specific number 1 seed, they must be it and they have a group that reflects that. Ixus have their triumph at Netgamez over H2k to restore confidence in their ability after losing danger man solz. Kasparov played for them at Netgamez and made a seamless transition into the starting lineup and hit the shots that solz would have been proud of. Rumour has it that defeat at Netgamez would have ended the sides chances of attending CPC, but fortunately that is not case and they have a group that they should win.
eSuba must think they've a good shot of progressing through the group stage behind the Dutch team, these cpc 'veterans' had to qualify but have recently traded players with iR to build strength. They have the former serious gaming side oxid to contend with and they remain a wildcard element with regards to whether they will click after SO many changes.
Group B is the group of death, an overused term but as fitting today as it was the first time. Who in this group can honestly believe they will win all 3 games? Dignitas will undoubtly be the favorites for the group. The Brits are looking to defend their CPC crown and infact win their first major since CPC1. With the addition of CPC1 3rd place mint they will hope to be firing on all cylinders, the i30 event in the UK prove ample practice ground for a side who are a sleeping giant waiting to pounce. Behind them fall Logitech who will be looking to banish the memory of Denmark and the shgOpen. Logitech, the former Idle side, surely have what it takes to win the event if the stars align, but Logitech and form guides don’t exist, you rarely know which Logitech is going to show up, they could bow out in the group stages or they could end up in the grand finals!
inteRaction will be a potential banana skin as the Czechs represent an unknown element, described as 'onliners' by many, they're dangerous if they prove their doubters wrong. They have more than enough quality to, again with the right maps, get themselves out of this group and cause an upset. Not to be forgotten adocom complete group B, the nice guys of CoD2 have experience and many a friend. They'll be looking for some favours as they certainly got the short straw with this group, but at the same time, their experience and ability has kept them in CoD's elite for so long, so if the sun shines on them they may play a big part in the shakeup of the group.
Group C features 3 of shgOpen's prominent figures with TeK-9 renewing their rivalry with Copenhagen eSports and suXus looking to sneak past them both. Starting with TeK-9 or Real Madrid as I like to call them, a side with power and ability, but sometimes found lacking in the final third. On paper their roster should instantly make you believe they can win the tourney, and they can, but you're never sure whether they will. However they have a favourable draw with both Copenhagen and suXus having undergone roster changes in recent months. To Copenhagen’s credit they've picked up some class players in sacrim and plaekki most notably with their Eurocup winning history, if they've gelled quickly they will get out of the group and look to win the whole thing.
suXus went to Copenhagen with little confidence in February and now will do the same in enschede with both a tough draw and the loss of some key players. However at the same time, they performed brilliantly in Denmark, perhaps lightning will strike twice in their home country? scubadviers complete the group and will prey on the mistakes of the teams above them. They're more than capable of taking 2nd if they play to their best, they'll see suxus as beatable and then hope for an inconsistency from one of the top 2.
Group D has a simply mouthwatering tie in store as H2k will have to face Speedlink at some point. The rumour mill says Speedlink are firing on all cylinders and despite taking a vacation after Eurocup are back with a bang. That wont bother H2k who look like they've finally come out from the rain and into the sunshine. Consistency is something that hasn’t partnered H2k in anyway shape or form in the past months, but with a solid and coherent Netgamez performance they should be more than capable of getting out of the group and then matching the Germans. However should either Speedlink or H2k not be up to scratch Reason are MORE than capable of making them pay. A side with bags full of talent need a solid performance, they'll have i30 as ample preparation and should then look at one of the top 2 as beatable. inFlux will look to make their mark on top end of CoD, in this group they've got their chance, they'll either upset the group or they'll be the whipping boys.
