To answer your question, a 10-15 minutes walk is about right. there are supermarkets/restaurants everywhere (cheap pizza near the cathedral) and some bigger food chains/suppermarket chains can be found on and around the Meir (near 'stadsfeestzaal', bottom of the map)

first thing ya need to know when entering belgium is that your allowed to borrow people's car if you return it in same state and refill it with gas, usually the owners dont mind at all, you might consider bringing a screwdriver if you go for this option tho
