Crossfire 3.2

Crossfire 3.2 is launching in a couple of days, and here's a sneak preview of what you can expect:
  • Cheaters will no longer be banned. It's clear to anyone even remotely active in the ET and Crossfire scenes that our current policy of banning cheaters is inadequate. As a result of this, we have decided to introduce a new system whereby cheaters are tagged instead of banned. The tag will be clearly visible on the user's profile together with the tag duration and proof, and behind every instance of their nickname. Please note that those tagged for cheating will not be allowed to play at Crossfire competitions.
  • Spammers will no longer be banned. The same applies here: the huge number of duplicate accounts present on Crossfire is testament to the fact that banning people simply does not work. Spammers will instead have their posting rights temporarily disabled (they can still browse the site while logged in ordinarily during this time).
  • As per the above, banning will only be used in extraordinary situations.
  • Report functionality for comments, content and users. This will give users the opportunity to report cheaters or otherwise. These rights will be revocable.
  • Soft-deleting. From now on most (and soon all) deleted content will be soft-deleted instead, which means that deleted content can be restored. This will also add more admin accountability as we will be able to see who deleted the content and why.
  • Extensive administrator logging. Practically every administrator action will be logged, increasing accountability.
  • New userlevels. The following user levels will exist as of 3.2: member, tagged, restricted (posting rights revoke), trustee, news writer, moderator, anti-cheat administrator, administrator, head administrator and developer. This will help us run the site more efficiently as jobs will be delegated as opposed to the free-for-all that currently exists.
  • Most of the ban list will be cleared. This includes everyone banned for cheating and/or spamming.
  • The return of the search function!
  • Loads of other smaller stuff that you'll probably discover at some stage too.

Expect some down time (a couple of hours) within the next 48 hours.

Yay or nay?

Any questions?

A million thank yous go to 4drenalin3 for making all of this possible!

I approve !
YAY :PP

E: THERE WILL BE WERY MANY ADMINWHORES I GUESS :PP
<reserved>

nice :)
if you can tag a cheater, than you can aswell ban them.. you can say "yeah but we cannot ban everyone blablabla" well atleast some part of them are banned then
I guess it's the same reasons why spammers won't be banned anymore :)
Parent
when does someone become a spammer, it's more difficult to define a spammer than a cheater. 30posts/hour is spamming or 60?

a cheater is a cheater and they should not be tolerated, if you see one, just ban them.. end of discussion imo
Parent

Quoteend of discussion imo
Parent
We're hoping that by tagging cheaters instead of banning them we'll be doing our bit by keeping the community informed as to who has and hasn't been busted, while also giving the cheater an incentive to stick around as opposed to making a fake account. Of course some may still make fake accounts -- indeed this might end in disaster, but it's clear that banning isn't working, so we have to try something else.
Parent
Don't put it in profile, put some sign near nickname....
Parent
We have both.
Parent
There'll be two types of tags: red and orange. Red tags will be for cheaters, and will appear both on their profile and behind every instance of their nickname. Orange tags will be for those caught playing with cheaters, and will appear only on their profile. It's very possible that there will be some fine tuning to this, but the above is what we'll be starting with.
Parent
all the busted people from like 2005/06 or whatever or just the one that will get banned after that update?
Parent
Just the latter, although if we find a super nerd for anti-cheat administrator they might retrospectively add the cheat histories to the accounts of known cheaters (visible only to admins).
Parent
dont add my 3 years old one :(
Parent
add mAus, if you don't i cba
Parent
terrible.. should have all the people playing EC that have been busted on their also.
Parent
The Red tags are fine, but its sensless to do orange tags. Members: 38726 so 30000 get orange tag then?
Parent
just tag them like hitler tagged the jews
Parent
i still don't get it. who exactly gets tagged as a cheater?
so half of aero and half of squad.ee get tagged as cheater when they cheated 3 years ago on a public? then this is probably a bad thing for the mgc and the et scene as a whole as trustworthy mgc's suddenly have half of their players tagged as 'cheaters' (ye, that's kinda sad actually but still, you can't change it..) or is it just current cheaters? then how do you define that?
Parent
It has nothing to do with old bans/busts. The people currently banned for cheating will have the remainder of their bans converted into a tag (tags are temporary, just like bans). Also, anyone busted from now on will be tagged instead of banned.
Parent
There is SLAC now! NOCHEATERS anymore, like killerboy and khaplja says.
Parent
Yay!
What about the search button?
QuoteThe return of the search function!
learn to read ;)

Stupid american.. edit maybe?
Parent
looks fine to me
nice thing with the tagging ^^
IN for anti-cheat admin

":D"
Sounds good
be ready for the red tag eheheheheheh :D
Parent
Search is fixed and will be deployed with the upgrade.
» Search has been temporarily disabled
:x

great stuff!
update it at 5 am orso...not at peakhours -_-

sup Baggiez?
will the cupsection be revised to chronological order & with format & hour in the box on the left?
instead of the name of the cup? and only active cups displayed instead of the ones that have passed still in there?
That's planned for the next upgrade.
Parent
sounds all good to me :)
Quoteimage: cup_gold Gold Became god on Crossfire.

you are just awesome!!
This is the first time I have nothing to say about your policy.

:}D Well... ok... this "cheater" tag sounds like jew armband during WWII. As far as you don't kill cheaters in real life, it must be ok!
send all cheaters to a work camp ? sounds a bit like in "the cheat report" :)
Parent
Now now... not all jews are cheaters
Parent
Sounds great :-)
very nice, didnt think of the tagging system but it sounds good
good job :)
spammers will be like:

wow look at me. im a badboy. im tagged.
Perhaps there was some ambiguity in my list, but spammers will not be tagged, they'll simply have their posting rights temporarily disabled. Only cheaters will be tagged.
Parent
When several people reply to a message, you have several inbox messages and for the moment, you have to click the message announcement, read it, go back to your inbox, click the other message announcement, etc... Its pretty annoying, is there any way to select all the messages and mark them as read, would be way quicker
at least I open them all in different windows with ctrl clicks
Parent
Ahah did not know that ctrl tip (never knew how to open serveral windows while using my pad) ! Thx man
Parent
try clicking the mouse scroll button :)
it's better than bothering second hand to touch the keyboard key. although mouse scroll button might be a bit unconfortable at start.
Parent
It has something to do with pageviews ;)
Little effort to keep crossfire up there.
Parent
You mean that since I have to click several times on the different replies concerning the same post, it will give more views to the page ? Id never have thought about such a way :P
Parent
That's how website marketing works :)
Parent
and with adblock? ^^
Parent
How?? All advertisments are blocked..
Parent
they are blocked by your adblock after being sent by the server to you.
Parent
Fortunatly there are guys like MarseilleFrancis who have over 9000 replies / day!
Parent
Its a good effort I think ;)
I like the tagging feature
sounds cool
Was about time, thanks :O)
Seems nice, everyone with 4 years and up membership should qualify for trustee.
Being a member for a long time doesn't make you smarter/more mature...
Parent
u serious ? :D I can imagine somewhat lots of users who have a 4 years and up membership don't quite have the moral or character to be trusted :D
Parent
Hmm, wasn't he an admin once ? Not sure tho.
Parent
I stand corrected
Parent
anyone with a 5 year or older CB account should qualify
Parent
this is xfire , not clanbase ok?
Parent
Really good upgrades, especially the tagging system and reporting. Keep up the good work! :)
krosan showed me that tag shit. he tagged himself as a cheater too bad i didnt take a ss
you friend of krosan? nice...
Parent
i thought u already knew that

if u wanna i can introduce u, but he dislikes fins:PP
Parent
Ive had two decent conversations with him already, once spent almost an hour or two with him talking on vent n8r h8n' each other HARD like usually so we're familiar already! also we keep on replying on each others' posts.

we have this weird bond between us
Parent
we share more stuff then???

i talk to him on vent too.
Parent
i kind of see people like baggiez disabling some people from posting comments
i wonder who counts as "spammer" and who doesn't
In his eyes, you are currently spamming.

Watch out.
Parent
We have an automated tracking system that calculates when a user has too many deleted comments etc. in which case he's reported for spamming and so on. That's when further action can be taken such as revoking of posting rights :)
Parent
Cheater profile hits ftw.
What about the inbox stuff, Krosan? :)
Cool, but you lied to me on irc tho.
Parent
QuoteSpammers will no longer be banned.

happened when u, Sean, stopped admining :(

nice to see you :*
Bromance. :3
Parent
what about a new site design`???
when this gonna be released?
Parent
January or so.
Parent
is anyone already in creating it?
Parent
Not that I know of.
Parent
was december 1 or 2 month ago :(
Parent
nice!

many thx to 4drenalin3
Nice stunt to unban chap and not get flamed for it. "Crossfire's Twelve" :)
Same thought here :D although it's quite cool way to do it :D
Parent
Nice updates ! :3

Can't wait for CF 4 though, would be nice to have a fresh design.

But more functionality is great in the mean time ^^
I only read the cheaters part and i already loved it xd
Hmmm let's see how it works out although I don't like the idea of seeing people like AlexL and Qyz back here even if they have 50 fake accounts. I would love to see users with a ''history'' getting tagged although I doubt it will happen.
hello motherfucker, we've never been gone. love, alex and Qyz
Parent
Sounds pretty nice.
<place_comment_in_epic_journal>
well done 4drenalin3 !

Keep the good work!
QuoteThe tag will be clearly visible on the user's profile together with the tag duration and proof, and behind every instance of their nickname. Please note that those tagged for cheating will not be allowed to play at Crossfire competitions.

Tag duration? If someone's tagged for cheating be it recent or 2 years back he should surely stay tagged. Who cares if you get tagged for a 3month period after which everything will be forgotten again. Once a cheater always a cheater!

Also it should be displayed on their post headers (next to the name like that "post has been edited" symbol) just to bring even more of a shame to them, otherwise slowly but surely you'll have cheaters running around bragging about profile hits :(
Hi german mate who replied to me on gamestv,

There should be a limit to how long the tag stays on because people change. If you were a 15 year old little nerd who thought he didnt care about an online game back in 2006/2007 and cheated because it seemed like a funny thing to do, you can very well be a 19 year old mature guy now who loves to play ET and will never cheat again and doesn't want anything to do with it :)

So it would be kinda harsh to leave the ban tag on forever. I say put it on for a year or so :)
Parent
im a 15 year old who doesn't really make a big deal about cheaters but doesnt cheat. IMO this tag system is awesome!
Parent
well done, let's see.
very likable
very nice updates so far, but still missing a ton of improvements.
WHERE THE HELL IS DELETE BUTTON

GIVE ME BACK MY DELETE BUTTON
Also was wondering about that...does it mean users can no longer delete their own comments? O_O
Parent
seems it was only for yesterday :)
Parent
Fix the AJAX error when adding members to clan?
+ How will you be dealing with all this absurd racism going on here????? :(
Finally :)

Sounds good :D
What the gel? This is horrible even now crossfire is spammed and trolled really hard. What will happen now? Was a rhetorical question.

Need some really strong ignore system imo.

Add +1/-1 system on comments, just like on youtube.:-)
go smoke weed and make fragmovies :l
Parent
You feel offended?
Parent
why would I
Parent
I don't get this at all..
Parent
QuoteSpammers will no longer be banned. The same applies here: the huge number of duplicate accounts present on Crossfire is testament to the fact that banning people simply does not work. Spammers will instead have their posting rights temporarily disabled (they can still browse the site while logged in ordinarily during this time).

banning doesn't work because you deny someone a privilege they previously had, so instead you're going to...deny a privilege they previously had but in a slightly less complete manner.

Have fun with the same amount of fake accounts :P
and I was just writing the same :P
Parent
The new way gives slightly less reason to make a fake account
Parent
why? you can read crossfire even if you aren't logged in.
Parent

What good will that do? Disabling a spammers posting rights will simply result in the spammer creating another account so they can post again. It's not going to change anything.
whatever
sol has a vagina
hoping to see thread bumping introduced soon
Here's a crazy idea, make registering possible only with people giving their slac id, esl id, cb id & etpro guid... or at least make posting only possible after inserting those...
It will be bothersome for people to setup multi accounts... on the other hand, it will be bothersome for any new normal member... argh, hard to figure out something that wouldn't affect both sides...
not gonna happen, because crossfire is no only open to ET, but to several games

I wish your idea would pass though
Parent
yea, and the size/depth of their genitals, phone no. and social security no. ...just to be sure.
Parent
and passport no and age and pic and HDD no... just to be super sure!
Parent
That's why I said, that it's a crazy idea :)
Parent
what United Kingdomfusen and Netherlandsronner said

These are great, might keep Belgium Krosan from abusing his admin rights in every discussion where someone disagrees with him
Glad you don't disagree with the changes we worked out now.
Parent
No worries, you'd delete my comment if I did :)
Parent
seems to be nice!
this got some + and -, imo give em a try!
pfff, add some flash games with highscores and such.
can u guys delete my other account. i think its called...flatron or miks or something.
Yeh, I got a question..

Why the fuck is the 'img' bb not fixed yet!? Everybody is posting large images which fucks up the fucking layout.

Perhaps an idea for 3.3!?
it is working with all browsers i use (FF3.6, FF4, Opera 10+)
Parent
...

What I'm trying to say is that they should do something about the img bb. So large with more than 600px width should be resized..

"getimagesize"
Parent
and as I said, that is already done in all browsers i use...
Parent
tAMjee approves this journal
no gfx sexytime? :(
Seems nice but I hope there will be put a stop to all the bad trolls. There's been too much spam lately.
seems to be nice!
expect gnajda's comeback
Quote by solPlease note that those tagged for cheating will not be allowed to play at Crossfire competitions.

does that mean, there will be further cc´s? :)
Nobody ever denied that...
Parent
the banning (or nonbanning) system sounds a lot better, good work :)
Computer says nein
Bad idea, imho :)
tell me which and why so I can tell you how miserably wrong you are :P
Parent
This will be an opportunity for all the immature kids and retards to troll more and write bullshit in journals, not to mention about fake links going to " strange " websites or viruses. So crossfire will turn into trash ( was almost like that to this day, now it was just the final step )
Parent
just because bans will be much more rare? as I got it, kids who would fake link to viruses would still might get ban. I dont understand why you think it might lead to "trolling more".. ? spammers wont be banned, tho they wont be able to post either
Parent
Trust me, it will get worse :P
Parent
dogma? cant do better?
Parent
Sounds good, keep up the great work :)
sounds good, hope there wont be too much spam tho
why should be there any more spam than is here right now?
Parent
Nice idea :) but would still prefer if you just allow some special characters in names or then again, remove people who are inactive, :o

But sounds interesting. keep it up! :)
Why remove people who are inactive?

If you remove oldskool highskillers, people would just steal their names n troll.

And what if you'll return to ET after couple of years, and then your account has been stolen. :/
Parent
I don't mean high skillers, I mean, a guy who registered 5 years ago, inactive since 4 years ago. he is totally unknown,

I mean he is just taking the space and the name, besides. i am sure that he wont return after 4 years of quitting...
Parent
Very good decisions.
