The coroner arrives at the scene of a murder at 11 P.M. She takes the temperature of the body and finds it to be 85,9°. She waits 1 hr, takes the temperature again, and finds it to be 83,4°. She notes the room temperature is 60°. When was the murder committed?
All temperatures are in Fahrenheit, regular body temp in fahrenheit is 98,6°
I demand all answers in celsius!!

85.9 fahrenheit is 29.94444444444445 celcius
i dont know why but in yermany if u talk about temperatures nearly 99% of all cases u talk about °C :(
This is a widely known forensics assignment.

not actually a free bnc, but you get to pm loekino

Algebraists do it in groups.
(Logicians do it) or [not (logicians do it)].
Möbius always did it on the same side
room temperature = (60°F - 32) : 1,8 = 15,5°C
body's temperature at 11 P.M = (85,9°F - 32) : 1,8 = 29.94°C
body's temperature at 00.00 A.M = (83,4°F - 32) : 1,8 = 28,5°C
if we do remove body's temperature at 00.00 A.M from body's temperature at 11 P.M, we'll get the number, which removes body's temperature per hour
29,94°C - 28,5°C = 1,44°C
Heart will stop working when body's temperature is less than 15°C.
So that dude is gonna die between 9.00 AM - 10.00 AM
-_-
edit: this is wrong btw.

dont want bnc, even if this answer should be right
We have a regular body temperature of 37°C, a temperature of 29.5°C when the coroner arrives, a temperature of 28.5°C an hour later and a room temperature of 15.5°C.
Regarding the rough rule of thumb that the human body looses 0.833°C per hour after the exitus with a roomtemperatur of 21°C and the fact that we have a roomtemperature of 15.5°C in this case, the victim died 4,5 hours before the coroner arrives - so its 6.30pm. :o
But there alot of other things that could cool down the body even faster/slower. In some cases the intestine works on for about 24h which would decelerate the speed of the temperature drop.
tell us the result, so I can sleep peaceful tonight. :<
edit:
c = 37°C
28.5°C / 29.9°C = 0.95 = a
N(t) = c x a^t
= N(t) = 37°C x 0.95^t
37°C x 0.95^5h = 28.62°C
= 6pm
nvm, I give up. :-<
T0 = 29.94°C
T1 = 28.55 °C
Tm = 15.55 °C
Koelwet Newton : T(t) =Tm + (T0 -Tm)*E^-kt
-> 37 = 15.55 + 14.4 * E^-kt
k = ln 14.4 / 13
--> t = ln(14,4/21.45)/ln(14.4/13) = -4.033 Hours
11PM - 4 H = 7PM
but i'm happy i got the right answer :)
