Instruments

Who of you does play an instrument and which? How much did it cost you and how much time did it take you until you could play it properly?
And most important: how did you learn to play it? Music school, by yourself or with friends?

Yesterday I just ordered an E-Guitar and will soon start to learn it with the help of some friends and also mostly by myself. I know that it will most likely take a lot of time but I think I am motivated enough to get through that learning stage and I am sure it will be a lot of fun. =)

Tell me your story! :)

Love,
vaGgi :*

PS: Show us some picture of your instrument! =)

I have 2 guitars had them for 4 years or so and can't play them properly (can play one classical song) and lost motivation pretty fast. Great instrument to learn to play tho just takes a lot of practice if learning by yourself.
e-guitars or acustics?
Parent
ah ok.

how did you learn to play it/them?
Parent
I was just watching youtube videos and using tab sites like http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and my brother is pretty good on the electric guitar.
Parent
ah yeah, its cool to have someone right in your family who is able to play the instrument youre trying to learn.

thanks for the link :) maybe (after a long time of learning the basics :D) i will visit that site again and practice =)
Parent
I just used that site for the tabs a lot of basic tabs on there for you to learn as well.
Parent
cool. thanks!

guitar - 200 euros, 6 months if you play it properly and have discipline ;)
6 months? I know people that claim it takes 5 years until you can play rhythm guitar on half decent level :D
Parent
There's no WAY it takes 5 years to play rhythm guitar :o I mean if you think about it there are 60 chords in total, which really, isn't a LOT considering most of them take the same shape anyway, just moved around the fret board ^^

It would not take 5 years, after 5 years you could be playing like a fucking god if you had stuck at it and took it seriously!
Parent
depends on expectations I guess...
Parent
Knowing the chords ain't hardly enough to play well allright..
Parent
sure, strumming techniques, rhythmic patterns and reading music will obviously take longer, but to be able to play and sing along to your favourite song is totally do able :p
Parent
Yeah, sure :)
Let's hope his favourite song isn't from <insert random band known for complex/difficult music here>
Parent
well, mine wasnt as expensive as yours, but i think it should be ok for me as a beginner...friend of mine who plays guitar and bass recommended one to me.

6 months? i thought of much more time :o guess youre some kind of talent, eh? :D

what genre do you like to play on it? rock/metal/whatever...?
Parent
No point spending lots of money on a guitar when you first start out only buy expensive guitars when you get good at it or start to really enjoy learning it so you know what your buying.

It takes longer than 6 months to become even half decent at playing the guitar too lol
Parent
yea that were exactly my thoughts.

the one i ordered will be enough for now and maybe, who knows :D, one day if i am pretty decent i can switch between the guitars and have some variation :p
Parent
Yeah well 6 months is a LONG time if you play your guitar for an hour every day ^^ I donno how serious you are thinking about playing the guitar, but I guarantee if you play an hour maybe more every day for six months starting from scratch you will see where a little bit of motivation and some hard work can get you :p

and no i'm not but I have played since a young age.

I like to play metal, rock, whatever I feel like playing really. I learn some chart stuff as well :p
Parent
sounds cool =) i will try as hard as i can to learn it :) i am so excited already for the guitar to arrive...cant wait :D
Parent
I'm not saying you'll be a pro at 6 months lol :p A lot of songs arent as hard as you might think either. My favourite riff ever is Plug in Baby by muse, and Imo after the basics I don't see why you couldn't aim to play that riff pretty early!

And here are my guitars, btw they are more than 200 euro, I meant that I wouldn't recommend spending over 200 euros on a first guitar :p

That was before I customized it :)
Parent
i know, it will take sure take a lot of time, but i am ready for this shit ^^

cool guitars you have! respect =)
Parent
cheers ^^ I love mah guitar. I am actually selling the last guitar btw, so if you progress to an intermediate level and I've still got it, don't hesitate to message me :D

I'll keep it in mind! =)

Music Man JP - i have to kill you and rob you now
Parent
genuinely have bonded so well with the guitar. I was at a shop one time and tried a musicman Axis.. it was a pleasure to play, but I just felt more at home with my JP some how
Parent
Been trying to save up for a Parker Fly, but getting a GF kinda ruined my economy :P
Parent
niiiice :D I have actually played both parker Fly and Nitefly guitars, I personally preferred the Nitefly, but they were both sweet to play xDD
Parent
I tried a Fly at a local store, and ever since I've been in love.. But then it got stolen from the store (wasn't me, I swear!), and they decided to quit selling those. So now, whenever I see a guitar store, I go in to see if they have a Fly, but I can never find one :(
Parent
from my experience, at least in scotland, most guitar stores only sell cheap ibanez or stagg guitars lol ^^ I have to go into Edinburgh if I wanna look at quality made guitars
Parent
got some picture of your guitar btw?
Parent
I wish I could play guitar. or drums x)
drums or guitar always were my dream :) i just never could be arsed to start learning an instrument and because of my fucked up shifts, i cant spend much time on going to a guitar teacher or whatever, so i will just try to learn it myself.

i think everyone can learn guitar if he's motivated enough, but otherwise i think that you need a lot of talent and "multitasking-ability" to play drums :D someone correct me if i am wrong, please ^^
Parent
from what I know its important to have someone to show you the first steps so you wont get used to totally wrong things you cant get rid of anymore, or something.

then again, there is enough examples of people who tought themselfes and became god-guitarists :D

I think once I am done with my fernschule I might buy an acoustic guitar... that would be a start. drums would be even nicer, but I am sure I cant do 4 different things at the same time xD and its a bit too loud for a mietwohnung.
Parent
there are also e-drums to practice =) they almost make no sound, friend of mine (girl) also has a set.

maybe we could create a band if youre learing too...? xD
Parent
yeah, my life isn't nerdy enough yet, lets make a band over the internet! :DD
Parent
no instrument
only played drums live on stage several times without a single practise lesson
well anyone can learn how to play chords and solos thats no biggie (practice 10 hours a day and you will learn quickly) but the main thing that you want is the ability to pick out chords from a song that you hear on the radio and understand which chords are connected (aka how to write music) and that will take years of practice :P
years i am willing to spend if there is no other way :p
Parent
did start piano but im too impatient to stay at one. i just like to listen instead of playing. =)
same, did for one year and got boring (too hard ;s)
Parent
i think that piano is also really hard to play, isnt it? :o

and i think that wouldnt be the right instrument for me...my grandgrandmother always wanted me to play piano, but i was too young and not interested in that at all.

still hasnt changed :D but its different for learning an e-guitar :) had an acoustic when i was a kid, but didnt want to play it either.
Parent
i think you have to have a passion for it. I learnt piano because my parents made me, it wasn't fun.
Parent
I bought electric guitar couple of weeks ago, and my father has accoustic. So im learning it through ( youtube - martyzsongs , www.guitarjamz.com) and ofc my father shows me something..

Guitarjamz.com
sign ur email there, so u get beginner/blues/solo videos.
yea i already looked through some youtube tutorials too which start from scratch, starting with how to hold the guitar the right way, which types of guitars there are, etc.
after that there are the first steps how to play basic stuff.
Parent
Martysongs is the best youtube teacher.
I recommend it
Parent
thanks for the advice :)
Parent
Learned playing piano but never got to the point where I could actually play something good imo, at least now I am able to read notes :)

are you playing in a band?

thats hell a lot equipment you have :O
Parent
i was playing in a band, currently searching for a new one :)
Parent
good luck with your search :)

what genre do you play most of the time?
Parent
I started playing when i was hearing metal, then i went over to metal-/whatever-core and the past year im mostly trying to play between the buried and me, protest the hero and to get a wider range of music im adding those "classic" bass stuff like RHCP or RATM.
Parent
cool =)

Parent

Piano for 13 years, but wasn't working enough because my teacher was not strict enough to push me to work, I gave up three years ago but I enjoyed playing the pieces :)
Drums. Had an acoustic set few years back but after I moved out I had to switch to electric one. Soon I realised I had no space for it and had to sold it, but was about to buy new one this year.

My acoustic set was Pearl MMX with pearl hardware (pearl eliminator etc.) and mainly with Zildjian K and A-custom cymbals. http://iron.pp.fi/mmx.jpg

My electric kit was Roland TD-12. I was about to get TD-12 again or TD-20.

I got a cheap beginner electric guitar plugged into a Marshall Valvestate and a standard Yamaha acoustic guitar.

I learned chords and some riffs of the web and am now trying to understand music and songwriting (chord progressions, scales/chords, whatnot). Never had any lessons.
and is that way of learning good for you so far?
Parent
Yeah, there are so many website that provide excellent information. If you're able to motivate yourself I think that the Internet is a great way of learning to play guitar.
Parent
ok thanks for your opinion :) and well...motivation isnt lacking, at least for now :D
Parent
I used to play the bass guitar, taught myself how to play it but lost motivation eventually so now it's just sat in my attic collecting dust :(

My gf on the other hand is insanely musical, she plays the piano, flute and the cello.. :|
olololo Rock-/MetalvaGgi incoming ;)
