It takes more than just 'doing it'. You would need soo many people to do this. The guys who originaly created ET were using the Quake 3 engine, and it still took them many years. They're professional developers with a high paid job. People here are script kiddies without real prospects or skill. Sure, there is some skilled developers here, but not enough... no way near tbh.
It would take a group of 50 around 1-2 years to do, and then it's getting the license for use of material and the engine, then the funds needed to pay the server costs etc... it's not an option unless ID, Splash or Activision do it.
The servers that would be required would be huge and the bandwidth would be ridiculous. 1 dedicated server costs a lot of money, you would need a whole rack for the stats parsing alone tbh (if it was successful ofc).
it would actually 'only' require a central server as server browser which also would host the stats (if you necessarily want that feature) otherwise you could still use dedicated servers which would need to run the (probably not even adjusted) server software. There'd not be such a big difference to QL, where you also have to download and install at least 'something'.
so someone would just have to create the api a slightly adjusted client and that should be it. (maybe to make it somewhat a success someone might have to re-do the menus so they'd be more newcomers friendly)
gameplay and mods like cpm and such are 10 times better than QL.
Q3 is just outdated, QL has a new and way better netcode than Q3 and its not that fast which attrackts more peoples attention.
I m still convinced if you would release a new Q3 with just better netcode and only a few improvements to get the gametechnology up2date, it would sell better.
Same goes to ET.
ET is fucking outdated, the hitboxsystem and the netcode is a joke compared to nowadays games and technologies available.
Rework ET properly with fixing a few bugs and new hitboxes/netcode would prolly give ET a slight boost again. Also that would be a chance to prolly get ET into systems like Steam.
I think that the netcode doesnt bother any player at all, that he would quit becaus eof that. Same goes for the hitboxes.
there are other reasons why people wont start playing ET anymore / and ppl quit the game.
ET is so actually very hard to install, to configure and to understand when you play it. How the servers work etc. for new players and nowadays nolifers it's just too much work even if you re-launch it.
You just go buy xbox and put cod:bo in it and you are set to go. That's where the problem lies.
people always knew that they re not gonna install a pc game and start it and thats it.
at least everyone with the intention to become good in a certain game knew that he has to get custom settings, config, etc.

And ET source code is released so you could use that:P
