actually the land was part of egypt where the philistines lived at, later they split up and actually existed before the jews. later on the jewish religion came up and a little state called israel came up. then there were a lot of wars, but later on both got beaten down by the persians (and were sort of temporary not really existing for a while anymore). so you can actually say the jews were existing on a small place, living friendly side to side to the philistines, but started to capture themselves more and more land, by taking away huge parts from the philistines' land due to armed conflicts
