CPC Revisited

[whine]

So why am I whining here today? At cpc it was really embarrassing to see CoD players setup in a mere minutes, whereas some ET teams needed over an hour before they could play. So what's the difference? After I bashed him in Quake, United Kingdom Nellie pointed out CoD players have ten times as much lans as ETplayers so they are bound to have some experience setting up their mouse, keyboard and headset.

But I talked to some CoD players and its not the experience. CoD players do not use windows hacks and other tweaks, simply because it is not allowed by any serious lan. So why not? Lets take a look at perfo. He's a bright kid, but the usbpatch that worked so well at home made the LANpc crash, taking 20 mins to system restore. Next came david. David is the kind of player that install windows, plugs in the mouse and starts playing. So after perfo was done playing with his ubertweaked-15-patches-pc david had a real bad game. Never having used any of the tweaks, david had no idea what was going on.

So what would be a practical solution? Only allow mousedrivers and windows registry tweaks. First of all, lets face it: its a lan. You are playing on a different pc anyway. Nobody flamed about the TFT's, everybody had the same handicap. Second, as long as the pcs can run 125fps there is no real need for high USBrate, besides most new mouse allow you to change it in their drivers. And windowsaccel? Well, you can get rid of allmost all the accel by using the good old Norway raziel regfixes.

Would this be the only solution? No, but it is the most logical solution and the reason why all major lans only allow drivers and registry tweaks.

Parent
who are you?
Parent
im joking meight! i still love you! <3 xd
Parent
And btw, what can you tweak in registry ? :o/
hmm i guess pretty much everything
Parent
well, i can't imagine even 1 thing now :(
like ?
Parent
i dont remember now :D too much time since i did something with regs
Parent
ok you pr0tweaker :D
Parent
ofc! well use google if u r that interested :(
Parent
wasn't really interested, just curious, but it's ok now
Parent
this is unexpected
Dunno why people didnt just use the accelfix.exe that way the next person if they dont use just has to double click save all the fuckin around, and your right about the usbrate thing to, most mouses come with the ability to change it anyway
some ppl are made to be complicating, like women you know ? :))
Parent
does it matter with only 2/3 lans a year?
just restore a ghost after a game, only takes 10 mins
im scared of ghosts :(
Parent
that would be the other solution and it usually took 20 minutes.
Parent
Quote...wheras some ET teams needed more then a full hour before they could play.

but it's better anyway huh ?
Parent
setup a VM solution and dont save changes when you restart, goes back to the previous settings. np then.

btw a ghost which just has windows and the games installed would take about 5 minutes to restore
Parent
That would be an awesome solution :P

[spam]Couldn't resist the urge to write that you bashed Nellie in Q3? :-D[/spam]

You have a valid point there, mEIGHT. Sounds like a good idea to me.
make every lan byoc problem solved xD column worthy tbh!
NOT MY FAULT THAT SYSTEM RESTORING TOOK 20 DAMN MINUTES
Well, that was probably the first time I saw a computer crashing because of an USB-Patch. It's nothing special and if the computers are setup properly it isn't a problem at all to tweak it. Further you couldn't play with 100fps because you would have gotten some sound bugs. There was seriously something wrong with the computers or I was just lucky picking those that had the problem.

Having 125HZ or 500HZ makes a huge difference if you're playing with some older mouse. Just check the esreality benchmarks and you get what I mean.

In addition I must say that I whined big times about the TFT which was black and white.
when i played not only the sound was dropping at anything higher than 76fps, i couldn't even move properly (999) :P
Parent
u had to uninstall the shitty sound drivers they had !
Parent
First time? Are you kidding me?
Parent
yu den overdrive :D
kheb u in de trein der gelijk over gegeven, dus ik zwijg nu
You could also argue that the computers should have been set up properly if they wanted to be treated 'professionally' (ie. no USB patching etc.). Why should we treat it like a 'CPL' computer, when you boot it up and you have Windows Live Messenger, ICQ, Daemon Tools and countless other programs loading on Startup? The computers didn't even have the correct chipset/soundcard drivers installed (sound skipped when you used any FPS over 76).

My set up took around 10 mins each time, and over half of that was spent trying to plug in my keyboard and mouse, I couldn't plug my mouse into the front USB panel, because then my USB key wouldn't fit in the one beside it. They could/should have had extension cables.

I'm assuming the CoD2 players weren't expecting to be able to patch USB, due to the fact that it's not allowed at other LANs, therefore they didn't try. We were, however, clearly told that we were allowed to do that.

Patching the USB port should take less than 10 seconds if the PC is set up correctly.

Nobody listened :'(

And the usbrate proggy did crash a lot of pcs :P
Parent
I didn't have time to check Crossfire when I was setting up! :P

QuoteAnd the usbrate proggy did crash a lot of pcs :P

You can finish that sentence: because...
Parent
the only thing i need is drivers
Lan players should be able to tweak the computer as much as they want as long it doesn't blow up the timelimit.
All USB Patches crashed a lot of computers less the USB tool made by raziel, but you had to do it unmarking "real time" and rebooting after the patch was applied, we noticed that when there were 3 computers fucked up already.

The sound problem was annoying because you were not able to go higher than 76 FPS unless you were using an USB headset, personally i prefered having the sound bug but playing with 125, so that's what i did.

Maybe it's illegal to use those tweaks in some big lans, so they (CoD2 players) are just used to it, but still there are mice like my diamondback that doesn't allow me to tweak its rate in drivers, this is changing nowadays since almost every mouse driver allows you to do that, but besides the rate problem, everything else is tweakeable by registry, and like someone up said, having 2 or 3 lans a year, it's not worth to change.
H4c3rz, play with default config and lets see who wins,

et , a computer hakcing game!!
I'm glad theres nothing serious to whine about :D
who cares if it takes time to set things like u are used to have them?

It's totally different feeling if u try playing without accelfix when u have played with it last 2 years. I tried once and couldn't hit anything.
Also usbpatch does give different touch no matter what fps u got..

I think it's just a good thing if u can enhance your settings with such settings, and CoD players prolly suck aim-wise when u watch them :P
CoD players dont need to track :P And what about Quakewars? I can imagine quiet a few big lans picking it up when it is released ... Dont forget Quakecon btw :P
Parent
that's what I was referring to, they don't suffer from tfts either :)

about quakewars, I doubt it will be very popular game anyway.. at least many ET players won't prolly play it :P
Parent
Look at any big shooter released lately, they all got lans. Quakewars is in the top 10 most anticipated games atm. It will be huge, whether the pro players like it or not.
Parent
no tracking needed @ et:qw, look @ the xhairs and spread.
Parent
Not to mention the rate of fire and 150 bullet clips some guns have.
Parent
aaah, who will shot anyways when you can use nukes x-#
Parent
once again there is no accel in ET when improved pointer accuracy is disabled
about mouse hz just like urtier said some of those older mouses give much more negative accel with lower hz
just dont run a rtcw tourney next time =)
I went through a real adventure when I tried to uninstall Setpoint drivers someone had put to the computer. Uninstalling these kind of things usually isn't a problem, but this Setpoint was german one. After succesfully using the famous dice-method I managed to uninstall them, but next time the one who installs drivers in weird language should remove them after the use.
the computer I was using at one point had german gfx drivers, was fucking hard to change the settings when u had no idea what they are saying. (it had the other scheme/layoutstyle which I wasnt used to and I didnt know how to switch it to the classic view)
Parent
I had to deinstall the new version of setpoint and install the older one ( because the new doesn't have keybinding features ), it took about 5 reboots. Everytime you change something it has to reboot, not to mention the errors it keeps giving.
Parent
had to uninstall dutch setpoint :o)
Parent
wierd languages :D
Parent
i had an estonian keyboard setup that wouldnt change to english on matter what and estonian oldversion of setpoint
Parent
Just drivers will do, it worked for me. :O)
tbh if it was byoc at cpc3 i really dont know how you would do it, everyone would have to carry there computer around all day. lolol
also everone i saw sol install haxs for sure.
ROCKY showed us what real skill is at the lan, good job m8!
I think i was the only one learning from the experience :D Only problems i had was @ 1st game vs v&e...
Problems:
Mouse sens in windows was @ 5th notch not 6th by default on all PC's...
PC crashed after applying hz patch by raziel
Weird-ass resolution resulting me in not seeing my xhair, or seeing it kinda inverted
Couldn't put my keyboard on my lap because my keyboard cable is too short and the pc's were above tables =(

2nd game I already knew that 1440x900(lol) resolution works best with those monitors, and that after you applied hz patch, you have to reboot and select "Use last known configuration that worked" @ boot up. And as you know later they gave extension cables for keyboards! I was quite suprised, and also happy since now i could play like i play at home!

Sound didnt lag for me because i had my USB soundcard with steelsound 5hv2, and somehow even playing on a pc which had mouseware installed and some other junk i managed to uninstal it smoothly and set up my mouse like i want! Guess i was just lucky :P
