HD is the way to go. After seeing 1080p HD video, going back to standard DVD's with shitty resolutions is just painful. I guess the same goes with fragmovies. I think your question is a bit weird on the whole: why would you want to make high resolution video with "slightly less quality"? Make high res, high quality. Period.
On a grand scale, I'm predicting HD-DVDs and Blueray discs will have the same kind of impact on DVDs, as DVDs had on video casettes: one day you'll be throwing away your DVDs, because the image quality is so shitty you don't want to watch them anymore. Like you did with your video casettes.
well if you cap at a high res and don't resize, then you'll get decent quality still, but if you resize from say 1280x1024 to 800x640 you'll get improved quality
With 16xAA (256 samples per pixel) there is no need for downsizing. If one captures with 1600x1200 with 8xAA, you'll have 64 samples taken per pixel (8x8). If you then resize it to 800x600 bicubically, a single pixel in the final image will be an average of four pixels: you've used a total of 256 samples for these pixels (64x4), which equals the number of samples you'd use, when recording simply with 800x600 and 16xAA.
Also, one thing people don't really think about, is, that the viewer has to upscale the video while watching it, if the size of the video doesn't match the size of the viewer's display. Try upscaling a 800x600 image to fit your display, and then do the same for 1280x720 image: which one looks better? I haven't done any research on the upscaling algorithms of standard players, but I'm guessing most are using either bicubic or bilinear resizing, so those are the algorithms you should use while testing.
Cap at high quilty and high res, you can always batch resize afterwards. Personally, I think that 800x600 is good enough if you've encoded it right you'll get great quilty at a decent resolution and it wont be a huge file size. Try and find the middle ground though but never sacrifise the quilty tbh.
as long as the quality is decent and it plays without alot of problems, im happy. thing with high reso vids (atleast for me) is that rewinding isnt that easy
in windows and ingame, QUALITY!
