Monitors claiming 2000:1 or above usually achieve that using dynamic contrast, which looks crap.
If you think contrast is important then look for the real contrast number in the monitor specifications before you buy. It's sometimes given as "700:1 (DC 3000:1)", where 700:1 is the real contrast and 3000:1 is the fake one that is used in marketing.
